As an emerging economy, the Brazilian government has launched nationwide scholarship programs in order to strengthen the education and workforce of its people. Through the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program, thousands of Brazil’s brightest students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are given the opportunity to study at some of the world’s finest universities. Scholarship recipients spend one year of study abroad and then complete their degrees at Brazilian institutions. The United States is currently hosting nearly 2,000 students from the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program.

Meet some of the Brazilian students studying in the USA!

“I will work in order to pursue a PhD degree in the field of biological sciences, more specifically in the cancer therapeutics area. My education experience in the U.S. was a great chance to get deeper into this area, learning more about molecular biology and immunology with the great faculty at Rutgers.”

-Helena Flores Mello, from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, is a junior studying Biological Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

“This program, it’s helping me a lot to broaden my horizons, to see how things are done in a developed country and how people deal with all these different things. I hope I have the opportunity to bring all the good knowledge that I acquired here and apply it in Brazil.”

-Fábio Witt Jagnow, from Universidade de Ribeirão Preto, is a senior studying Computer Information Systems at California State University, Chico.

“Speaking English fluently is essential in the chemical engineering field in Brazil. Learning how to deal with different people from different cultures is also good.”

-Roberta Alves Medina, from the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia da Bahia, is a junior studying Chemical Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

“It was a unique opportunity to study in one of the world's best universities. I would be able to maintain close contact with competitive educational systems closely related to technology and innovation.”

-Raphael Lucas Vidotti, from Centro Universitario da FEI, is a senior studying Civil Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey..

“My goal is to work with toxicology, maybe forensic toxicology. I think this program is, more than everything, an experience that changed my vision of the world and the future."

-Luísa Becker Bertotto, from the Universidade Luterana do Brasil, is a senior studying Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
