Helga Martell from Peru: Studying Business Management at the University of Nevada, Reno

Helga Martell from Peru: Studying Business Management at the University of Nevada, Reno

Jul 21, 2017

Helga Martell from Peru is a junior majoring in Business Management at the University of Nevada, Reno in Reno, Nevada.

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

I decided to study in USA because of the excellent educational opportunities this country has for its local and international students. In addition, USA is a multicultural country where I can be myself and to share my experiences with other international students. The standard of education is pretty high, a fact that I love because it makes me challenge myself to be better professionally as well as an individual person.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno?

By a recommendation of a friend who heard good things about the English program.

What do you like best?

I identify with my university. I feel proud of being a student here because the excellent professors and community.

What do you miss most?

Food.

How has this program helped you to handle future study at a U.S. university?

I’ve been studying here for over two years. It’s improved a lot. The English program helped me to be organized as a student, what to expect from classes, and to communicate efficiently.

What was your biggest surprise?

The open-minded culture.

... your biggest disappointment?

I haven’t had any yet

What are your activities?

International club and Tahoe trip.

How easy or difficult was making friends?

It was difficult.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

I am graduating next year with one major and two minors. I am already applying for internships so I can feel more confident with my career and to get stable work after graduating. I am currently working at the College of Business as a project coordinator which is making me gain more experience.

What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?

I would recommend to come with all the intention to really enjoy the experience as well as work hard. I personally consider myself a very hard working student. I have scholarships which help to pay my tuition and for that I need to keep a high GPA and to be involved in extracurricular activities. That is what I love the most, that the USA is always encouraging its students to work with the community and to help each other.
