Studying Mathematics at Appalachian State University

Studying Mathematics at Appalachian State University

Feb 26, 2025

Considering studying in the USA? Master’s student Silva Keohulian from Lebanon says “Go for it!”

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

I decided to study in the USA as I believe that the USA provides a wholesome education experience nurtured with accredited education, advanced research opportunities, resources, and cultural diversity.

Why did you choose your university/college?

I chose Appalachian State University because of its great reputation from referral, amazing department, and community.

Have you taken any classes outside your major that you’ve enjoyed?

As a math major and a diverse person, I enjoyed taking an MBA business analytics course as one of my electives to hone my technical skills.

What were some struggles you faced and how did you handle it?

Being Lebanese Armenian, my small college town, Boone, located in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina, has no resources or restaurants for my cuisine. My craving for Lebanese/Armenian food turned me into a chef. I enjoyed making food from my culture and inviting friends over to introduce the delicious Lebanese and Armenian cuisine!

What is your favorite place on campus?

I love sitting in my hammock by Sanford Hall and reading.

What do you want to do after graduation?

After graduation, I would like to utilize my mathematical skills in the industry.

What are some of your summer plans?

I would love to visit my beloved country Lebanon if the situation gets better.

Have you traveled around the U.S.? What were some of your favorite places?

I had an incredible time during my stay in California, particularly in San Diego, LA, and San Francisco. I couldn’t help but notice the striking resemblance between California and my home country, Lebanon. Both boast stunning mountains and beautiful beaches, offering the unique opportunity to ski and swim in the same day. Additionally, my summer internship in Manhattan was an unforgettable experience. Exploring the city after work was a highlight, with each day bringing new discoveries and adventures. It truly felt like being a tourist in my own city.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time as a student?

As a recipient of the Fulbright scholarship, I had the privilege of attending a conference in Washington, DC, alongside other Fulbright scholars from the MENA [Middle East and North Africa] region. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to come together, bond, and share our experiences of studying abroad. We enjoyed our time in the capital, socializing and engaging in meaningful conversations about our exchange journeys.

Describe your experience in three words.

Enlightening, refreshing, adventurous.

What would you tell students who are considering studying in the U.S.?

If you’re considering studying in the U.S., my advice is simple: Go for it! It’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture, gain valuable education, and form lifelong connections. Don’t overthink it — take the leap, and embrace the experience. Additionally, explore opportunities like the Fulbright scholarship, which can provide valuable support for your academic journey.
