Hnin Ei Shwe Yi of Myanmar plans to transfer to the University of California system after two years at a community college.

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

I come from Myanmar, where a civil war is currently taking place, preventing me from continuing my education. This led me to the decision to study abroad, and the USA emerged as the best option due to its top universities, colleges, and unique campus lifestyle. 

Why did you choose your university/college?

When I began college selection, my primary consideration was finding a college in San Diego since I planned to live with my grandfather. I discovered that Southwestern College aligned perfectly with my preferences. The location is safe and close to my grandfather’s home, which makes it convenient. Southwestern College offers a wide range of degree programs, including computer science, which was particularly appealing to me. 

Have you taken any classes outside your major that you’ve enjoyed?

Yes, I have taken several general education classes as an international student. In addition to my major classes, these classes are required for all students. One of the classes that I particularly enjoyed was the communication class, which I took during my first semester here.

As a new international student in the U.S., I was initially afraid to speak English and communicate with local students. However, this class pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me become more confident. I am no longer afraid to communicate in English and I can now give public speeches and presentations in front of any audience. 

What were some struggles you faced and how did you handle them?

Studying abroad is not easy at all. I faced many struggles, mainly homesickness. However, I overcame it by trying to adapt to the culture here. The students are incredibly kind and helpful. I made friends and am making the most of the present. 

What is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus is the library. I can access many services there, such as borrowing books and free computer access. It’s a really quiet and peaceful environment, which allows me to focus on my studies. Additionally, the view from the library of the campus is incredibly beautiful.

What do you want to do after graduation?

After graduating from Southwestern College, I plan to transfer to one of the universities in California, specifically the University of California San Diego or UC Berkeley. I have heard that these universities have excellent research programs for my major, and their campuses are known for their beauty.

What are some of your summer plans?

During the summer, I am expecting to do an internship related to my major. I have joined the MESA (mathematics, engineering, science achievement) program at Southwestern College, which provides information for internships and workshops for STEM students. I am currently preparing for those internships by learning coding languages.

Does your university/college organize any fun events you’ve attended or are looking forward to?

Yes, there are always events for students. I particularly enjoy the flag-raising events at Southwestern College. They have raised the LGBTQ+ flag, the Filipino flag, the Native American flag, and the Hispanic Heritage Month flag. These events provide a great opportunity to learn about the diversity of people and the unity among them. Additionally, they always offer delicious food and giveaways.

Have you traveled around the U.S.? What were some of your favorite places, or where would you like to go?

I visited Arizona, specifically Phoenix, last year. During my trip to the Grand Canyon, I encountered snow, which was a completely new experience for me since I come from a country with a monsoon climate. Additionally, I also saw a desert on the way there. This trip was incredibly interesting as I learned a lot about different landscapes and beautiful places.

San Diego also has a multitude of beaches, and one of my favorites is Ocean Beach. It’s fascinating to see people engaging in activities such as skating, beach volleyball, and surfing, which are not commonly seen in my country. I absolutely love it.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time as a student?

Definitely, the finals week. I know it’s not everybody’s favorite, but during this week, my friends and I go to the library and the math center to study. We study there and have snacks together.

What would you tell students who are considering studying in the USA?

Studying in a new country alone might seem daunting, but it’s worth stepping out of your comfort zone. The USA offers top-notch education with a variety of programs, especially in fields like computer science. The inclusive and diverse community here is welcoming, making it easier to adapt and build connections.
