Learning English Through Culture: Experiences of an International Student in Chicago

My name is Lisa Suong, and I am an international student from Da Nang City, Vietnam. I am currently studying in the NEIU, which offers great opportunities for international students to experience the city of Chicago and learn English. Through SAELL program, I have been able to explore the city and make lasting connections with people from all around the world, while also learning how to effectively use English language tools for studying purposes.

One of the best experiences I have had through this program is how my teachers empower us to learn new things by actively listening to our ideas and suggestions every day, as well as incorporating various fun activities into the curriculum on a monthly basis. Through one of these activities, I was able to learn more about Chicago's history while also becoming more confident in communicating in English with native speakers around me.

Overall, learning English as an international student can be both exciting and intimidating. However, with the right program, it can become a unique and enjoyable experience. NEIU SAELL program has allowed me to learn more about the language through cultural experiences and explore the city of Chicago. My teachers have provided me with tools to practice my English in a fun way and gain a better understanding of different cultures. By seizing these opportunities, I have made lasting connections and grown both professionally and personally throughout this journey. Plus, it has given me a chance not only to learn but also to explore one of America's most exciting cities!
