Reflections on Experiences, Learning Through the SAELL Program

If you're looking to improve your language skills and gain proficiency in English, the SAELL program at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is the perfect choice for you. Through the SAELL program, you'll have the opportunity to explore the city of Chicago and learn about its unique accent and Standard English. Eunseo Kwak shares her experiences learning English through the SAELL program in Chicago and reflects on the positive impact it has had on her language skills.

Why did you come to Chicago to study English at NEIU?

“Exploring Chicago and improving language skills at NEIU is an exciting prospect for many students. As the third largest city in the U.S., Chicago offers plenty of opportunities to practice English in a variety of settings, from everyday conversations with locals to participating in events and activities around the city. With convenient access to downtown areas via public transportation and nearby supermarkets, as well as a variety of other student-centered amenities, NEIU is an ideal place for students wishing to enhance their language proficiency while exploring the city's attractions.”

What was your favorite part of your SAELL English classes?

“My favorite part is communicating with my classmates from all over the world. Learning about other cultures and their accents. We are all communicating in English so it helps us practice the language.”

What is the best part about living on campus, in the Nest?

“Living on campus is very convenient, there are grocery stores like Jewel-Osco and Target nearby, and the transportation system is pretty accessible so it is very easy to go downtown. Plus there are lots of events and programs offered for the residents, so you can hangout with other students who are living in the Nest.”

What fun activities have you done here in Chicago?

“Walking down streets filled with cultural attractions such as parks, museums, or lakes. All of these offer plentiful opportunities for enjoyable experiences. But I also enjoy hanging out with my classmates and having parties on Halloween or Thanksgiving, it was fun!”

Are you more confident speaking English?

“I’m from Korea, and everyone around me only speaks Korean so I can’t practice English in my home country. But here, everyone speaks in English, so everyday I listen and try to express myself in English. And with SAELL program, I feel more confident writing and speaking English.”

What would you tell other students about the SAELL program?

“Gaining proficiency in English through a SAELL program in Chicago is an excellent choice. With its welcoming environment and helpful instructors, it provides the perfect setting for learning. The instructors here foster a comfortable atmosphere conducive to asking questions. This allows students to benefit from learning English within this inviting setting, while building conversational skills, expanding their vocabulary, and becoming more confident in using English language.”

Overall, the SAELL program at NEIU provides a great opportunity for students to learn Standard American English and explore Chicago. The comprehensive classes offered allow students to gain insight into pronunciation and intonation, as well as participate in field trips that provide firsthand experience of touring various sites around town. In addition, taking part in this program, students have access to knowledgeable instructors who foster a warm atmosphere conducive for learning.
