Interview:

Imonitie Atamenwan from Nigeria is studying for his master’s in Journalism and the University of North Texas.

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

The best schools in the world are in the United States; the quality of education is remarkable and there are tons of extra-curricular activities. I wouldn’t have picked any other country.

Why did you choose the University of North Texas?

Because I had heard so much great stuff about the University of North Texas (UNT) from my friends and professors from my former school, I decided to go to UNT for graduate school. Coming here was one of the best academic decisions I’ve ever made!

Denton is not a big city but there’s plenty to do and great people to meet. I fell in love with the city within days!

What do you like best?

I love that UNT does everything to see that students succeed and have a memorable experience.

What do you miss most?

I miss my family but I get to see or speak with them from time to time. Besides that, there’s nothing else I really miss. UNT is like home to me. I have friends in Denton and close by cities that I can call family.

What was your biggest surprise?

I was surprised by the great things I can accomplish by working hard and being disciplined. The United States offered me the opportunity to achieve my dreams with diligence.

... your biggest disappointment?

I’m disappointed that there are a few that are prejudiced, but that’s just a few. There are plenty of amazing people with whom I can surround myself.

How have you handled:

... language differences? I have had no language barrier. However, I sometimes have to repeat myself because I say or pronounce a word differently or with an accent.

... finances?

The two schools I have attended were not that expensive especially because of the quality of education. One can also work on campus and there are lots of scholarship opportunities. I currently have a decent campus job and a very impressive scholarship at UNT.

... adjusting to a different educational system?

For the most part, it is easy to adapt to the American system of education. If not, the professors are willing to help.

What are your activities?

I am …

How easy or difficult was making friends?

I had no problem making friends but getting involved with campus activities and organizations helped a lot.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

I’m getting my masters in digital media (or journalism) and this is one of area in which Nigeria has room for improvement. The world is advancing technologically and it’d be great for my country to do so in the media section.

What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?

I would advise international students coming to the United States to work hard and make the most of this amazing opportunity. Participate in a lot of activities and get to meet people from different cultures. Also, try to help others whenever you can.
