Zhao Li from China: Studying for a Master’s in Finance at University of North Texas

Interview:

Zhao Li from China is studying for a Master’s in Finance at the University of North Texas.

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

I am a finance student, and since Wall Street, the leading financial district in the world, is in the U.S. it was appealing to me. The universities in USA have the best professional expertise and provide a good research environment, that’s why I chose the U.S.

Why did you choose the University of North Texas?

The University of North Texas (UNT) has a high reputation in majors like music and public administration. Also, it is located in Denton, which is a small town near Dallas, and the quiet environment helps me focus on my studies.

What do you like best?

People here are very kind and nice; I’ve made a lot of best friends!

What do you miss most?

Definitely Chinese food!

What was your biggest surprise?

People’s lives in the U.S. led me to realize that we have to pay more attention to the mind rather than material stuff.

... your biggest disappointment?

The hot weather during the summer is a little unbearable.

How have you handled: ... language differences?

I’ve made friends with a lot of Americans and hang out with them to practice my English at UNT.

... finances?

UNT offers more than 980 scholarships, and I applied for a business scholarship to support my study. International students can also find part-time jobs through a campus career finding website. For example, I got a part-time job on campus to help me pay rent.

... adjusting to a different educational system?

It took a while for me to adjust to the education system and class style at UNT. I have to take quizzes every class, meet with my classmates for projects and do a lot of presentations. I just spend more time here studying and visiting professors to ask questions.

What are your activities?

I am a member of Chi Alpha’s international women’s group. We usually go on mission trips with lots of friends. I also watch football games, basketball games and musicals on campus. I have a lot fun here!

How easy or difficult was making friends?

I took part in a lot of activities and met lots of people, so it was easy for me to make friends.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

It is quite relevant. If I want to obtain a good career back in China, let’s say either at a bank or a big company, the experience of studying abroad is quite important.

What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?

I do recommend considering the University of North Texas if you want to study in the U.S. You will acquire a high level education, meet friends who share the same interests and have a wonderful time here!
