Overview

The Intensive English Program (IEP) at Georgia State University offers academic English courses to individuals coming from outside the U.S.A. and those living in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Most IEP students seek to enter academic programs at Georgia State University or other equally prestigious institutions. The IEP offers:

• Academic language courses that prepare you for U.S. college and university study
• Supportive small class environments with knowledgeable, friendly instructors
• Additional instruction free of charge with ESL tutors
• Several extracurricular activities offered each week
• Access to all university facilities and events, including the computer center, library, recreation center, health center, concerts, and films
• Housing in local apartments, university residence halls, and homestays

English Courses

Intensive English Program courses prepare you for college and university study in the United States. Courses include oral communication for academic purposes, reading and listening for academic purposes, extensive reading, structure and composition, and academic writing for university exams. You can also participate in IEP activities including our weekly conversation group, service-learning projects, and visits to Atlanta museums and other attractions.

The Intensive English Program also offers professional programs during the summer in conjunction with Georgia State University’s College of Law and Robinson College of Business.  The English for Professional Purposes Law (EPP:L) program is an intensive six-week program that provides language training in legal English. The program has been designed in collaboration with Georgia State University’s College of Law and is intended to prepare international LL.M. candidates for the demands of graduate coursework.  The English for Professional Purposes Business (EPP:B) program provides students with the academic preparation needed to succeed in a graduate business program.

Location

The Intensive English Program at Georgia State University is located in the heart of downtown Atlanta.  Atlanta is the unofficial capital of the Southeastern U. S. and a city filled with art, culture, and the special flavor of this unique region. It is a diverse city with vast opportunities for learning not only the language, but also the culture and varied perspectives of its residents.  It is home to the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), CNN, Coca Cola, and the Carter Center. The Intensive English Program is at 25 Park Place, 15th Floor. 

IEP Academic Calendar

English courses are offered during three sessions each year: fall, spring, and summer semester.

Application Deadline Dates
Students should submit their applications and all necessary documents by the following dates:

Fall Semester: July 10
Spring Semester: November 20
Summer Semester: April 3

Semester Dates
Fall (mid August to early-December): 14 weeks
Spring (early-January to early May): 14 weeks
Summer (mid-May to late July): 10 weeks

Admissions Requirements

Applicants

• Must have graduated from high school (high school transcripts required)
• Should possess a basic knowledge of English
