Interview with Megumi of Japan

Megumi, who is from Japan, is studying Business at Moraine Valley Community College.

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

Because I wanted to study English & Business at the same time.

How did you choose your intensive English program? What attracted you to your particular school? Why is it a special place?

MVCC has a pretty good intensive English program because I had those classes, I feel better speaking English with anyone.

What do you like best about studying at Moraine Valley Community College?

I like the professors in my school. They are really friendly and try to understand me.

What do you miss most about home?

Actual sushi.

How long have you been studying here? How has your English improved? How has this program helped you to handle future study at a U.S. university?

This is my sophomore year. I try not to speak my mother tongue, so I feel I’ve improved a lot. Now, I have the confidence to apply to school.

What was your biggest surprise about U.S. life and education?

I was surprised by the portion sizes of food.

…your biggest disappointment?

That I got used to the big portions of food.

How have you handled:
…language differences?

I made friends right after I came to America, so I tried to not talk/speak/listen to Japanese.

…finances?

Nope. My older brothers, grandparents and my parents support me so much. I’m spending a great time here without having to worry about finances.

…adjusting to a different education system?

I’ve never been in college or university in Japan, but I’d say the professors are more friendly and funnier, I guess…

What are your activities (clubs, sports, student associations, travel, homestay programs, special activities or trips sponsored by your Intensive English Program)?

I’m an International Student Ambassador, we collaborate with other clubs a lot.

How easy or difficult is making friends in the USA?

Fortunately, I had a lot of people to talk with me so that wasn’t hard for me to do.

What are your career goals? How is your U.S. education relevant to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

I still don’t know what I’m going to do in the future, but this bilingual skill definitely helps me to do anything.

What is your advice to other students from your country who are considering studying English in the USA?

Everyone has moments- sad or lonely. I think you want to have on or two friends in Japan who can mentally support you until you get used to living a new life. Otherwise, I recommend using the language you want to learn as much as you can.
