Studying Psychology at St. Joseph’s University in New York

Victoria Romão Nóbrega from Brazil is majoring in psychology with a minor in criminal justice.

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

I wanted a different experience in my education, and it was always a dream to live abroad in an English-speaking country.

Why did you choose this particular university?

I was looking for universities that were smaller and I would get some sense of security and community while attending school. When I found St. Joseph’s University I knew it was the right fit.

Have you taken any classes outside your major that you’ve enjoyed?

I took an art/philosophy class that was really interesting — we got to learn more about Greek art and history, something that I would have never done if I wasn’t in a liberal arts school.

What were some struggles you faced and how did you handle it?

I definitely struggled in the beginning with taking full English classes, but having a program that focused on perfecting my vocabulary and presentation skill helped a lot. Also having international friends helped me feel as a part of a community and understand that I was not going through that alone.

What is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place at St. Joe’s is the steps in front of Burns Hall (one of our buildings). I always hang out there with my friends.

What do you want to do after graduation?

After graduation I want to possibly stay in the USA for another year working under OPT, but then I wish to continue my studies in Europe.

What are some of your summer plans?

I plan on visiting my best friend’s country for a while, then she is coming with me to Brazil so I can introduce her to my culture and family.

Does your university organize any fun events you’ve attended?

Yes! I already participated in one this semester — we went ice skating in Prospect Park (Brooklyn, NY) and it was really fun. In past semesters we have also taken trips to Broadway and had dinners as well.

Have you traveled around the U.S.? What were some of your favorite places, or where would you like to go?

I have only gone to Florida to visit Disney World a couple of times with my family. But I still want to go to California and Hawaii. Hopefully I can go soon.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time as a student?

Hanging out with my friends on campus is definitely a highlight, but also going on a study abroad trip to Greece with the honors program has to be one of my favorite memories.

Describe your experience in three words.

Unique, unforgettable, remarkable.

What would you tell students who are considering studying in the USA?

I would say that even though you may be scared of taking the jump and being in a completely different country, once you arrive here you will see that the memories you are going to make, the friends you will meet, and things you are going to learn are worth the leap.
