Adjusting to Life in the U.S.

Midway University Helps International Students Acclimate to U.S. Life

Midway University, an affordable private college located in central Kentucky, has created personalized programs to make it easier for international students to acclimate to and succeed in the United States.

The institution has combined its strong academic programs with a caring, safe community for international students. The student body is composed of individuals from around the globe who are supported by friendly, skilled advisors who will help them navigate life on- and off-campus, including assistance with professional services like mobile phone service and banking.

Student Services

When international students arrive at Midway University, they are offered acculturation sessions to learn more about the norms, rules, and culture of the United States in general and the state of Kentucky in particular. These efforts are led by Mona Chorera, Director of International Admissions.

“Whenever something comes up, Mona is there to help us,” said Anuprita Mulik from Mumbai, India.

Elisma Stoltz of South Africa gives an example, “The first time I went to the grocery store. I was so confused. I did not know what self-checkout was, but luckily, Mona was there to help me.”

Students reported that everyone on-campus contributes to the welcoming atmosphere.

“I love the community here because everyone is so friendly and supportive… it almost feels like we are family and I am very thankful for that,” said Winta WoldeGeorgis, a senior from Ethiopia.

Stoltz agrees, “Everyone is so welcoming that they made me feel comfortable straight away.”

Academic Programs

Midway University is a vibrant and diverse coeducational institution that offers more than 20 career-focused majors, pre-professional programs, and three graduate programs. Majors include traditional programs, such as psychology, education, business, and nursing, and more unique offerings, such as an equine studies major and a bourbon studies minor.

The variety of classes offered at Midway will give students the opportunity to explore several majors before choosing the best for them. Many programs offer direct paths to jobs in the region and beyond. Associate’s, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees are accredited at the institution.

Midway faculty are experts in their fields, and 80% of full-time faculty have terminal degrees. Students enjoy small class sizes — the average class size is 17, and there is a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio — which means students will receive the personalized attention that they need to succeed. Additionally, faculty understand the importance of experiential learning, so students can expect to get hands-on training that will give them the skills they need to prosper in their chosen profession.

“Midway University has excellent labs and expert faculty,” said Sanat Patel of India.

Yaksh Patel, also of India, continued, “If I have any problems, the professors are available 24/7.”

Location

Not only does the University offer international student services, the campus is centrally located. The 200-acre, picturesque campus is home to the university and a working horse farm. Located in the city with the same name, Midway’s campus is in rural Woodford County, but Lexington, a thriving, mid-sized city, is located just fourteen miles away. Home to fine dining, an art museum, and great shopping — there is always something exciting to do in the Lexington area.

Midway University’s central location allows students to take advantage of both small town and big city life. The campus is situated near the I-64 interstate and the larger cities of Louisville, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio are also within an hour’s drive. Traveling from across the United States or internationally is easy and affordable since there are three major airports nearby in Lexington (LEX), Louisville (SDF), and Cincinnati (CVG).

If students opt to live in Lexington, the University offers transportation to-and-from campus.

“With the Midway shuttle service… staying off-campus is not a problem for students without transportation,” said Anuprita Mulik. She explained that the shuttle is always on-time and fits around students’ class schedules.

The caring, expert faculty and variety of student services have created a welcoming environment for international students. Akshar Patel of India said, “Everyone on the Midway University campus is very supportive.”

“I tell all of my friends to study here,” said Yash Darji of India.
