Studying English at Ole Miss IEP
Diamant Gashi from Kosovo is advancing his English skills at the University of Mississippi Intensive English Program.
What is your level of education and field of study?
I’m a licensed medical doctor in my home country, currently advancing my English language skills at the University of Mississippi (aka Ole Miss) through the Intensive English Program (IEP).
Why did you decide to study in the USA?
The U.S. is a melting pot of cultures and traditions from all around the world. Studying in the U.S. offers a unique opportunity to experience and learn from diverse groups of people, which can be valuable teamwork experience in today’s globalized world. Additionally, studying at a U.S. university provides a flexible learning environment that can help you achieve your goals and earn a world-class degree.
It’s worth mentioning that my wife is pursuing her PhD here, so being together was an important factor in my decision to study in the U.S.
Why did you choose Ole Miss?
As I aim to integrate into the U.S. medical system, I recognized that advancing my English skills was the first step towards achieving my goals. The IEP staff were extremely helpful in providing me with all necessary information, guiding me through the application process, and offering numerous scholarship opportunities, which made my decision to study here easier.
Ole Miss’s IEP program is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in its classes, extracurricular activities, and among its members. This aspect was particularly valuable as it allowed me to be exposed to different cultures and work alongside classmates from all over the world who were studying English for various fields, such as science, business, or literature.
Have you taken any classes outside your major that you’ve enjoyed?
Not really, I have only taken classes in the Advanced and Advanced Plus English Levels at the IEP.
What were some struggles you faced and how did you handle it?
While I have been able to enhance my English language skills by familiarizing myself with various accents, I still find it challenging to comprehend Southern accents at times, especially when conversing with elderly Southern gentlemen on a bus or at a market. Nonetheless, I am gradually becoming more proficient in comprehending Southern accents with more exposure and practice.
What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is definitely the pickleball fields. It’s where we spend our breaks between classes and use the time to connect with each other in a friendly and competitive atmosphere.
What do you want to do after graduation?
Once I finish the Intensive English Program, I intend to start preparing for the USMLE [United States Medical Licensing Examination]. This will provide me with the opportunity to gradually integrate into the medical system in the U.S.
What are some of your summer plans?
I am planning to visit my family at home for a couple of weeks, and then take some trips with friends within the U.S. before the fall semester begins.
Does your university organize any fun events you’ve attended?
Ole Miss hosts various events such as concerts, professional development sessions, and sports events, which we sometimes attend as a way to earn extra credits for our classes. The most recent one was a food event where students from Saudi Arabia showcased their culture and cuisine. These events help us to connect with each other and broaden our understanding of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Have you traveled around the U.S.?
During my travels in the U.S., I have had the pleasure of exploring a variety of Southern states, including Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. Each state had its own unique charm and culture that I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in.
Besides the South, I also had the opportunity to visit Boston, a city rich in history and character. Despite all that I have seen so far, I am still curious to explore more of the diverse and beautiful landscapes that the U.S. has to offer.
Where would you like to go?
There are many places in the U.S. that I have yet to visit, but I am particularly interested in exploring the East Coast more. I look forward to experiencing the diversity and vibrant atmosphere of the big cities over there.
What is one of your favorite memories from your time as a student?
One of my favorite memories as an IEP student involves participating in different extracurricular activities with my fellow students. These experiences included presenting our respective countries and cultures to primary school students, as well as engaging in discussions with elderly individuals over dinner at local retirement homes. Being able to share our experiences and listen to theirs was truly enriching.
Describe your experience in three words.
I would say it was enlightening, heartwarming, and memorable.
What would you tell students who are considering studying in the USA?
If you’re thinking about studying in the USA, don’t let the idea of moving to another country intimidate you. As an international student, you’ll have access to a wealth of resources and support that can help make your experience positive and fulfilling. So go ahead and take the leap — you won’t regret it!
