Studying Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Mississippi
Hyllore Imeri from Kosovo chose Ole Miss for its highly acclaimed PhD program in health outcomes research.
What is your level of education and field of study?
I’m a pharmacist by training and currently finishing up my PhD in pharmaceutical sciences with an emphasis on pharmacy administration.
Why did you decide to study in the USA?
There are several reasons why I chose to study in the USA. Firstly, the country is known for its academic excellence and unparalleled cultural diversity. Additionally, studying in the USA provides an opportunity to gain real-world working experience while enrolled at a U.S. university, which is instrumental in developing the skills necessary to succeed in today’s job market. It also fosters innovation and research, promotes international cooperation, and prepares students for a successful career.
Why did you choose your university?
I chose to attend the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) due to its highly acclaimed PhD program in health outcomes research. After interacting with the faculty and fellow students, I became even more certain it was the perfect choice for me. The small college town setting (ranked as the best in the USA Today) and friendly community also made it an attractive option.
Have you taken any classes outside your major that you’ve enjoyed?
I have mainly taken classes that are focused on my PhD program, but I have also taken some classes that contribute towards a minor in applied statistics. These classes were very helpful in my research and quite applicable.
What were some struggles you faced and how did you handle it?
During the Covid-19 pandemic, I faced some struggles, especially when I couldn’t fly back home to be with my family. Both my parents were hospitalized for weeks, which made the situation even more challenging. However, I was able to navigate through these difficult times with the help of my mentors, peers, and friends. Being in the PhD program at Ole Miss provided me with a sense of family, which was crucial during this time.
What is your favorite place on campus?
The campus of Ole Miss is known for its stunning beauty, featuring several picturesque spots. My personal favorite among them is the Grove. The sight of tall trees and squirrels scurrying around creates a peaceful yet lively ambiance. The area is always bustling with students working on their studies or practicing cheerleading.
Whenever I need to take a moment to be mindful and relax, the Grove is my go-to place. Also, playing “La Vie En Rose” (the Andrea Bocelli / Edith Piaf version) perfectly complements the serene atmosphere of the Grove.
What do you want to do after graduation?
During my PhD program, I have had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant, research assistant, and currently as a fellow at a large pharmaceutical company. The experience of being a part of the pharma industry and contributing to real-world issues has truly sparked my interest.
Therefore, after graduation, I would like to work on a similar team that generates real-world evidence on health outcomes. I want to contribute to solving problems that would benefit patients and advance the health system.
What are some of your summer plans?
This summer, my plans involve finalizing my dissertation; so, it will be mostly work.
Does your university organize any fun events you’ve attended?
There are numerous activities and events that take place at Ole Miss throughout the year. My favorite are the events hosted at the Ford Center. Since I joined my PhD program, I have made it a point to attend at least one show every month and they are still my top pick.
The Ford Center offers a wide range of shows from famous Broadway productions to opera concerts, making it the perfect place to go for entertainment.
Have you traveled around the U.S.?
I have traveled to several places in the U.S due to conferences and my fellowship, such as Boston and Austin. I have also taken trips with friends to cities like NYC, Washington DC, Philadelphia, LA, San Diego, Birmingham, and Florida, among others. It has been fascinating to witness the diversity in culture and cuisines across different states, especially the enriching differences between the East Coast and West Coast.
Where would you like to go?
The next destinations I would like to explore in the states are national parks, including Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone, among others.<
What is one of your favorite memories from your time as a student?
As a PhD student in the USA, I have had many valuable experiences that I will always cherish as some of my favorite memories. One of these experiences was going to conferences with friends and faculty. It was fulfilling to discuss research with like-minded individuals, explore new places, and connect with new people to discover new opportunities.
Describe your experience in three words.
Enriching, stimulating, and exciting.
What would you tell students who are considering studying in the USA?
