Welcome to the English Language Center at Georgetown University! 

Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., the English Language Center at Georgetown University is more than 60 years old and has a rich history and tradition of English language and teacher training. Our dedicated faculty and staff engage with a wide range of language backgrounds and learning styles through dynamic, innovative, and technology-mediated courses designed to meet the needs of today’s diverse student population.

Students and partners year after year choose the English Language Center at Georgetown for its academic excellence, notable faculty, and supportive and caring staff. Participants in our diverse programs receive personalized feedback from the faculty while our highly trained staff support students in their transition to American life and culture. Academic Programs

The mission of the English Language Center (ELC) is to promote global understanding and education through programs and services that enhance English language proficiency, language teaching, and intercultural understanding. The ELC offers 5+ dedicated English Learning programs as well as custom special programs to fit personal and organizational needs. These include: 

  • Intensive Academic English 
    • Program Start: August, October, January, March, May
    • Duration: 8 weeks per session, Monday-Thursday

  • Intensive Professional English 
    • Program Start: August, October, January, March
    • Duration: 8 weeks per session, Monday-Thursday

  • Intensive Language and Culture 
    • Program Start: August, October, January, March, May
    • Duration: 8 weeks per session, Monday-Thursday

  • American Conversational English 
    • Program Start: January & July
    • Duration: 2-week virtual and 3-week on-ground sessions

International Student & Scholar Services

At Georgetown University, we take pride in recognizing the diverse backgrounds our international students bring to the classroom to create an atmosphere of respect, transparency, and care for the whole person. In following through with that commitment of caring for each student, we've put together a comprehensive guide on all the resources you will need. Some of the services we provide include: 

  • International Ambassador Program: Ambassadors will help incoming international students to navigate the Office of Global Services (OGS) and Georgetown resources and advise on their transition to a new journey in Washington, DC.
  • International Student Advising: International Student & Scholar Services provides immigration and cultural support to F-1 and J-1 students and scholars whose affiliation with Georgetown is the basis for their U.S. immigration status.
  • Transportation: With a perfect transit score of 100, the school is located in one of D.C.'s most accessible neighborhoods, Gallery Place/Chinatown. Between metro rail lines, buses, and terrific walking and biking routes, you have no shortage of options to make your daily commute a breeze.
