Diego Jose Gris, from Brazil, is pursuing a master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering at North Dakota State University (NDSU)

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

Because of the high-quality education and research, the availability of the resources needed for research, and also because of my affinity with the American culture and language.

Why did you choose NDSU?

I chose NDSU because there I could find people that had the same research objectives that I had. NDSU is a leading university in its region and offers great opportunities in the area of agriculture. Besides, NDSU is located in a peaceful city with lots of friendly people that make you feel at home.

What do you like best about your university?

I really like the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds, which enriches your experience as a student and as a person.

What do you miss most about home?

My girlfriend, my family, and the food.

What was your biggest surprise about U.S. life and education?

The professionalism of people in everything they do.

How have you handled:

... language differences?

It is a little hard in the beginning, but if you come well prepared, you’ll get used to the language quickly. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and never stop improving. There’s something new to learn every day.

... finances?

Spending as little as possible and never beyond my means.

... adjusting to a different educational system?

This is not the first time I study in the USA, so it was easier to adapt this time. You just have to be willing to do your best and you will be fine.

What are your activities?

I play volleyball and table tennis whenever I can, and I like to hangout with friends and have dinner together. I also love to travel, but that takes more planning and you need to have enough funds to do so.

How easy or difficult is making friends in the USA?

It is not hard to make friends in the USA, especially with other international students as they are in the same situation as you are, that is, they don’t know a lot of people here in the beginning. It is really nice when you start meeting some local people.

What are your career goals? How is your U.S. education relevant to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

I want to be a great professional with lots of skills that will help me get a nice job in the future. Studying in the USA is a great opportunity to develop my career and bring more knowledge to my country.

What is your advice to other students from your country who are considering a U.S. education?

If you have the opportunity to study in the USA, take it! It will be one of the best experiences of your life, and you will go back home as a new person and with great knowledge and skills.
