Alessandro De Angelis from Italy: Studying Marketing at Berkeley College in New York

Interview:

Why did you decide to study in the USA?

I have always been attracted to the American lifestyle and culture and I wanted to live a new experience. I also thought that the U.S. could provide me with more personal and professional opportunities for my future.

Why did you choose Berkeley College?

The main factor that influenced me in choosing Berkeley College was the location. New York City is amazing and always has new things to discover. For me, it represents the center of the world.

What do you like best?

I love my program (Marketing Communications) because it combines business and creativity. Brand Management and advertising management have been two of my favorite courses. In terms of my school, I love the fact that Berkeley is so diverse—I have the opportunity to share the classroom with people from the U.S. as well as all over the world.

What do you miss most?

Other than (obviously) my family, the thing that I miss the most about home is the homemade Italian food!

What was your biggest surprise?

I think that the biggest surprise was U.S. eating habits! I was also surprised at the open-mindedness of New York City.

... your biggest disappointment?

I think my biggest disappointment was the work restrictions for international students, but at the same time I understand that it has to be regulated somehow. Fortunately, I have been able to find a job on campus.

How have you handled:

... language differences?

I had some difficulties in the first few months, but I knew that it was just a matter of time and practice. I admit that sometimes not being able to express myself exactly how I wanted was not easy, but I have been able to make it work.

... finances?

Finances are a really delicate topic. I am extremely lucky that my parents are able to support me, but I am aware of the sacrifices they have had to make. I am working hard to pay them back one day!

... adjusting to a different educational system?

I believe that the Italian education system prepared me very well. I did not have any big issues adjusting here.

What are your activities?

I am a member of the basketball team. It is an amazing experience that allows me to meet great people and travel around the United States. Last year, the Berkeley College Men’s Basketball Team won the USCAA Division II National title!

How easy or difficult was making friends?

It really depends on one’s personality; the more open you are the easier it is to make friends in the U.S., especially in a diverse place like New York City.

How relevant is your U.S. education to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

I am working to be successful in my field of study. I still do not have extremely clear goals since it is still very early. However, what I know is that I want to try different opportunities here in the U.S. before considering going back to Europe.

What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?

I would tell other students that studying in the United States is a huge opportunity, not only in terms of education, but also in terms of life and human experience.
