Work Options for International Students in the USA

We know you might have a couple of questions regarding how you can work and study while being in a US university. We have gathered a few of the most frequent questions we get asked from international students.

Can I work in the USA while studying with the F1 visa?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions by international students. Gaining work experience, along with a degree, can be incredibly beneficial to your professional goals. But additionally, studying in the USA can be incredibly expensive. So finding legal employment can be seen as a beneficial “return on investment” after you complete your degree program.

Fortunately with the F1 Student visa, international students are permitted to work off-campus after completing their first year of study. Employment with the F1 visa is Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training. So, what’s the difference?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

CPT is part-time employment, while you are studying your degree program. Think of CPT like an internship, meant to enhance your education. CPT can be paid or unpaid, but always must be related to your program of study by a connection to the curriculum.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT is a full-time job, available to students after they complete their degree program. Think of this like the end-goal of what your degree has prepared you for. International students can apply for regular jobs in the USA, and they can legally work full-time for up to 12 months. Some degree programs that are considered STEM will allow additional time for OPT.

Lewis University has some of the highest placement rates for CPT and OPT employment with our international students. Our reputation for excellent education means that employers are seeking Lewis students for employment. But furthermore, the campus is located near the city of Chicago which has plenty of employers who are specifically seeking international students for employment.
