East Carolina University and Language Academy
ECULA provides high-quality intensive language instruction to international students, professionals, and the local community.
Program Description
The ECU Language Academy (ECULA) provides high-quality language instruction to students like you from all over the world. It is an intensive, English for Academic Purposes program, preparing students for enrollment at East Carolina University, named one of the “Best Schools in the Southeast” by the Princeton Review.
There are many great reasons to come to ECULA and ECU. Read on to find out a few of them.
No TOEFL required
You never need to take a TOEFL exam. Students who complete the Language Academy program have fulfilled their language requirement for ECU, and can apply directly to an undergraduate or graduate degree program without any additional requirement such as a qualifying TOEFL or IELTS score.
Language Academy Features
Instructors at ECULA all have master’s degrees or higher, as well as considerable teaching experience both in the U.S. and overseas. That experience gives them special insight into what overseas students coming to a foreign country can face. They are here to help you succeed.
ECULA students receive more than 20 hours of expert classroom instruction per week, in an intensive skills-based program that gives individual focus to grammar and writing, reading, listening comprehension, and speaking.
Classes at ECULA are small, allowing teachers to give students the professional instruction and personal attention they need to build strong English skills.
One thing you won’t find in other language programs is the weekly pronunciation laboratory guided by professional speech pathologists, at the university’s Department of Communication Sciences. ECULA students love having the opportunity to spend some time each week focusing on their pronunciation.
Classes are held on the beautiful main campus of East Carolina University, near downtown in the small but active city of Greenville, North Carolina.
ECULA is accredited by CEA, the leading accrediting organization for intensive English programs in the U.S.
A few other features:
- A perfect location—90 minutes from the beautiful sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, and 90 minutes from an international airport
- The First Friends program, partnering students with other international students for fun social activities
- Field trips to fun, interesting places such as parks, museums and art galleries
- A weekly film series
- Free use of all university facilities, including a state of the art recreation center
ECULA offers two 16-week sessions a year beginning in August and January. The summer session begins in May and runs for 10 weeks.
East Carolina University
The fastest-growing campus of the University of the North Carolina system, ECU has nine undergraduate schools, a graduate school and two professional schools, preparing students for careers in business, engineering, health and medicine, computer science, and many more areas. In 2010 Forbes Magazine ranked the university 36th in its America’s Best Buy for college.
Greenville
A city of parks and bike trails, with the Tar River flowing nearby, Greenville is a small, friendly, active town. With 85,000 people, it’s not too big and not too small. The city was named one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People” by the America’s Promise Alliance, and ranked in the top ten of the nation’s “Best Small Places for Business and Careers” by Forbes Magazine. The city has a major medical center and a thriving downtown. It is also near the vibrant “Triangle” cities of Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill. Greenville has a mild climate and experiences all four seasons.
North Carolina
North Carolina stretches from the Atlantic Ocean beaches in the east to the Appalachian Mountains in the west. North Carolina is a popular tourist destination, not only because the many state parks offer a variety of activities but also because it has many historical attractions. There are also many shopping outlets that sell designer clothes and more at bargain prices. It’s a wonderful place to live in or to visit.
