• a premier, academic English program founded in 1976
• four levels of instruction from high beginner to advanced (levels 110, 120, 130 and 140)
• three core courses in oral communication, reading and writing, and cultural engagement
• two module courses in science and humanities in which students learn English through university content to help prepare for their future majors
• the grammar instruction necessary for real-world success, integrated in all courses
• 20 hours of instruction per week in Fall and Spring semesters (15 weeks)
• over 25 hours of instruction per week in Summer semester (10 weeks)
• part-time study for eligible applicants (i.e. students whose immigration status does not require full time study)

Support for study at Penn State

• the IECP offers three paper-based TOEFL exams which satisfy the English language requirements at Penn State
• for students whose academic record is superior, the IECP offers certification to meet Penn State’s English language requirements for undergraduate and graduate admission
• students who complete Level 140 may dual-enroll by taking two courses at the IECP and two courses at Penn State as a non-degree student

The IECP mission:

In teaching and service, the mission of the Intensive English Communication Program is to provide outstanding instruction in academic English communication to adult English language learners so that they can successfully participate in American institutions of higher education. The IECP is also committed to the continuous professional development of our faculty and staff and to contributing service and leadership to the TESOL profession through our faculty members’ teaching, service and committee work.

IECP Admission Requirements

To be considered for enrollment in the IECP, you must

• be 18 years of age by the end of your first IECP semester
• have a high school diploma
• have received a minimum English exam score on one of the following:
  • 410 TOEFL (PBT)
  • 34 TOEFL (iBT)
  • 4.5 IELTS
• provide an official transcript (grades) that reflects academic success at the most recent institution of study. Academic success means that the applicant has completed, and excelled in all academic coursework including English
• pay the $100 application fee
