Interlochen Center for the Arts

Overview

Interlochen Arts Academy is a fine arts boarding high school in northwestern Michigan. Each year, five hundred students from around the world come to the wooded campus at Interlochen looking for greater opportunities to learn, create and perform. Leading educators and exceptional peers challenge each student to achieve their artistic and academic potential. Students attending the Academy enjoy a built-in audience of their peers and non-stop opportunities to appreciate the work of other young artists and faculty. Regular performances, recitals, galleries and screenings provide a lively atmosphere and ample opportunities to build lifelong friendships and learn from others.

Academics and the Arts

Interlochen Arts Academy offers challenging and comprehensive college-preparatory academics that include courses in math, science, English, history and foreign languages. Gifted educators seamlessly merge these subjects with an intensive arts experience.

Academy majors include: dance, creative writing, music, motion picture arts, theatre, visual arts, and comparative arts. Arts Academy graduates go on to find success in the arts – and science, technology, medicine, law, business and education. With an educational foundation that emphasizes a synthesis of arts and academics, Academy graduates are ideally situated for success in an economy fueled by creativity.

Comparative Arts major

The comparative arts major is designed for high school students who want to pursue in-depth, self-directed study across the arts and academics. This is a college-preparatory experience built into an arts-oriented curriculum that allows students to explore their own cross-disciplinary interests.

Residence Life

For young artists, nothing is better than living and learning alongside others who share a passion for the creative. Students have countless opportunities to perform and share their work with others. In turn, they enjoy and learn from the work of their peers, who are some of the most dedicated young artists in the world. With support and encouragement from friends, faculty and well-known guest artists, Academy students find time for self-discovery and growth. They find a place where they can be themselves.

The campus is a safe, residential setting where students learn independence and self-reliance sooner than their peers attending other schools - a real advantage when preparing for college.

Despite their busy schedules, student still find time to have fun and develop friendships that last a lifetime. Deep conversations over dinner in Stone Cafeteria, impromptu jam sessions, weekly "coffeehouses" performances, walk through the woods, enjoying a guest artist performance and organized off-campus trips - these are some of the ways students can relax and enjoy the company of their friends and fellow artists.
