American Language Institute (ALI) Programs

The ALI has been serving international students for over 30 years, offering multiple options to study English while enjoying the California lifestyle on a safe, diverse, and welcoming campus. Students will benefit from ALI’s accredited language curriculum taught by highly qualified teachers. Whether you want to study for a semester or only a few months, the American Language Institute will help you improve your academic English, learn about American culture, and prepare for your undergraduate or graduate degree.

The ALI has four main programs to prepare international students for academic and professional success:

In addition, the ALI provides Customized Short-Term programs for groups. For example, these may include English for Healthcare, Hospitality Services, Engineers, or Business. 

 

Conditional Admission to CSULB: 

Applicants who meet all Cal State University Long Beach academic requirements but do not meet the CSULB English language requirement may improve their English proficiency first through the American Language Institute. Upon successful completion of the required Intensive English Program level, students may begin their degree studies.

*Limited to departmental approval. 

IEP to CSULB Transition / English Proficiency waiver:

If you do not have proof of English Language Proficiency and are seeking admission to CSULB or our local affiliates, our Intensive English Program (IEP) offers a TOEFL waiver / English Proficiency waiver.

Undergraduate

To be eligible for the undergraduate-level TOEFL waiver / English Proficiency waiver, you must successfully complete all classes in IEP Level 4.

*Upon successful completion of the ALI's IEP Level 4, you will meet the university’s English language requirement.

Graduate

To be eligible for the graduate-level TOEFL waiver / English Proficiency waiver, you must successfully complete IEP Level 6.

*Upon successful completion of the ALI's IEP Level 6, you will meet the university’s English language requirement. However, please be aware that individual graduate departments and/or programs, may review applications based on their own admission criteria, including their own English Proficiency score requirement.
