Going to Office Event in San Jose, CA
Overcoming Nerves and Embracing New Opportunities
Hello, everyone!! I’m currently a sophomore at TMCC and planning to transfer to UNR (University of Nevada, Reno). If anyone is interested in studying abroad while considering finances, check out this blog! I want to mention the 2 + 2 model which allows you to complete the first two years at a community college and then transfer to a four-year university or college to earn a bachelor’s degree in the U.S.
I’m on this pathway, and for my first two years, I chose Truckee Meadows Community College due to its affordable tuition, variety of majors available, and extensive support. One thing that has really surprised me about TMCC is how fast its services are, which is so helpful! Whenever I have issues with classes, my visa, or need any support, they deal with it so quickly (amazing!!).
Planning for my future
Now, I’m thinking of applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT) at the end of my education in the U.S. (in about three years). This program allows F-1 students to work in the states for 12 months. To improve my chances of finding a job for my OPT, I’ve been working on campus and actively looking for potential future employers in my field (accounting), so I’ve been working on business networking for over a year now.
On my way to San Jose
Recently, I got an invitation to an office event from one of the firms I’ve been interested in, so I went to San Jose, CA!!!!! I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement to go over there since it was my first solo trip like this, and I’d never been to San Jose before. Finally, I arrived at San Jose International Airport at night and I prepared for the next day by going to bed early. (I was so hungry, though, so I ordered a gyro bowl, which was perfect — I love Mediterranean food :))
Dealing with nerves and new experiences
The next day, I headed to Santana Row and looked around the restaurants and shops until my meeting. The city felt more diverse than where I live since it’s on the West Coast where more people visit from around the world. Then, it was time to go to the office! (I was so nervous.)
The office is located in Silicon Valley surrounded by hundreds of companies. At the office, I learned about how the firm works, its career advantages, and opportunities working there. I enjoyed it so much, and I appreciated the welcoming people.
Getting excited about my future
Working in Silicon Valley would probably be a powerful experience for me, especially since I'm passionate about trying new things. The area is a hub for leading tech companies, so while the people there seem busy, it would mean being at the heart of innovation. I’m not sure about my future career, but definitely, this event was worth it!
Thank you for staying connected with me. I hope to see you guys in my next blog!
