From New Student to Campus Leader: My Sinclair College Journey
Hello everyone! My name is Joao Mazega, I am an international student from Brazil, currently majoring in Integrated Systems at Sinclair Community College, located in Dayton, Ohio. I have taken upon myself to be one of the college’s student ambassadors, a welcoming guide, and a friendly face to our new students. Let this be a proper introduction to myself and the college I represent alike.
Where I’m From and What Led Me to Sinclair College
As I mentioned, I am from Brazil but saying just that doesn’t do justice to my journey. I moved to the United States with my family when my father’s job required him to relocate. Since this move wasn’t planned, I found myself feeling a bit lost when I first arrived.

I had finished high school a couple of years earlier but hadn’t attended university back home. Suddenly, my main goal became finding a college where I could continue my education.
Like most institutions, colleges required transcripts and standardized test scores, such as the ACT. Because I was coming from another country, I had never taken that exam before, so I had to search for testing locations.
After taking the ACT—feeling both exhausted and relieved—I happened to pass by Sinclair’s campus completely by coincidence.
I had never heard of Sinclair before, but something about it made me curious. The college seemed affordable, close to where I lived, and offered the program I wanted. After doing a bit of research, everything I needed was just a few clicks away. I submitted my application within a week and began classes about a month later.
My Academic Experience and Role on Campus
I truly value my experience at Sinclair. The professors here have played a big role in shaping who I am academically today. Many of them are incredibly helpful and approachable—very different from the stereotype you often hear about “college professors.”
That said, no group has supported me more than the Office of International Education (OIE). They gave me the opportunity to work as a receptionist—though some call it a “guest liaison.”
My role involves anything related to student engagement and reception. I’m often the first point of contact for students, whether they visit in person or reach out online. My responsibilities include answering phone calls, scanning documents, helping decorate the office, and even assisting with translation—since I speak four languages.
Campus Life and Supporting International Students
Working at the OIE has also allowed me to connect with students from all over the world. Last year, I became president of Sinclair’s International Student Organization (ISO). My goal has been to transform it into a space where students from different backgrounds can teach and learn from one another’s cultures.
The OIE itself has become a hub for students. We’re one of the few offices on campus with an open-door policy, meaning students can stop by anytime—whether to ask questions, relax, or just spend time between classes.
Over the years, I’ve seen countless friendships begin at the student table right in front of me.
Of course, joining the ISO isn’t required. There are many other clubs and spaces on campus where students can meet people—both international and American—from all walks of life.
What I’ve Learned and My Advice to Future Students
Being an international student isn’t a completely unique experience. While it feels personal when you’re going through it, many of the challenges are shared.
You’ll feel homesick. You’ll miss your family and friends. You’ll experience culture shock, language barriers, and even small things like navigating traffic in a new country. You might find yourself searching for international markets just to cook a familiar dish from home.
And that’s all okay.
My advice is simple: don’t be afraid to embrace those moments. Explore your new environment, step outside your comfort zone, and create new connections. Take advantage of opportunities and, at the very least, gain valuable experiences that will stay with you for life.
Why I Recommend Sinclair College
Sinclair College offers a wide range of opportunities and career paths. As a community college, it provides an affordable option for international students—many of whom are paying their own way—to begin their academic journey.
At the same time, students can earn an associate degree while preparing to transfer and pursue a bachelor’s degree.
For me, Sinclair wasn’t just a place to study—it became a place to grow, connect, and lead.
