Important Dates for Applying to U.S. Colleges 2023–2024

Important Dates for Applying to U.S. Colleges 2023–2024

Aug 9, 2021

This is a list of important application dates if you’re applying to U.S. schools in 2023 and 2024. Be aware that each school has different requirements, so you should research and verify the dates for each one you’re interested in applying to.

Regular Admission Applications

Deadline: January 1, 2023*

Regular admission (or regular decision) deadlines are typically in January. However, dates vary by school, so research each school’s specific deadline dates. One benefit of applying regular admission is it gives you more time to put together all of the information needed for your application (for example, test scores, recommendation letters, essays, SAT scores, and financial aid information).

Regular Decision Offers Made

March – April 2023

If you applied regular admission, you should hear back from schools within three to four months.

Respond to Offers

May 1, 2023

Accept the offer from the school you would like to attend to save your place there and decline all of your other offers.

Early Decision Applications for 2024

Deadline: November 15, 2023*

Early decision applications are typically due in November and December. The benefit of applying early decision is that you’ll know typically before the end of the year if you’ve been accepted. You need to be certain of your choice because if you’re accepted through early decision, the expectation is that you will attend that school.

Early Action Applications for 2024

Deadline: November 1, 2023 and November 15, 2023*

Early action is similar to early decision except you are not required to attend the school you’re accepted by. This allows you to be flexible about your choices without having to make a solid commitment. One strategy some students employ is to apply early action to a small handful of their top choice schools.

Scholarships

Some college scholarships have a November deadline. Research each school you’re applying to for exact dates.

Early Decision and Early Action Offers Made

December 15, 2023*

The majority of early action and early decision applicants will receive decisions by now.

Regular Admission Applications for 2024

Deadline: January 1, 2024*

Regular admission (or regular decision) deadlines are typically in January. However, dates vary by school, so research each school’s specific deadline dates. One benefit of applying regular admission is it gives you more time to put together all of the information needed for your application (for example, test scores, recommendation letters, essays, SAT scores, and financial aid information).

Regular Decision Offers Made

March – April 2024

If you applied regular admission, you should hear back from schools within three to four months.

Respond to Offers

May 1, 2024

Accept the offer from the school you would like to attend to save your place there and decline all of your other offers.

*Deadlines vary. Verify dates for each school.
