Emmanuela Akosua Opoku is a native of Ghana. Afer receiving an undergraduate degree at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, and a master's degree in environmental policy from the University of Cambridge, she taught at the University for Development Studies in Navorongo, Ghana. Opoku entered the Environmental Ethics and Philosophy doctoral program at UNT in 2014.
