Tibetan Buddhist Monk Tenzin Yignyen is back at Mohawk Valley Community College!
Tibetan Buddhist Monk Tenzin Yignyen is back at Mohawk Valley Community College! Monday, he began the creation of a sand mandala in the library. He will continue to work on the mandala all week, then will dismantle it in a ceremony on Friday morning to demonstrate that everything — including life itself — is transient.
In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the mandala — a geometric symbol or configuration of symbols — is a cosmic diagram that represents the dwelling place of a deity, according to the college, and it is ritualistically dismantled once it has been completed. Yignyen said Monday this mandala, created from colorful sand placed on a table, represents the Buddhist deity, Tara.
Throughout the year, MVCC hosts cultural events, like this one, to help students understand our diverse world and share their cultures! https://www.mvcc.edu/cultural-series/
