Be More at Marshall University

Be More at Marshall University

Sep 17, 2018

Founded in 1837, Marshall University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in West Virginia. Marshall is home to approximately 14,000 students and is located in the small but lively town of Huntington. Marshall offers international students a welcoming campus and an education with a focus on research, and emphasis on the student experience. Learn more about Marshall University to see if it could be right for you.

An International Focus: Marshall currently enrolls 500 international students from more than 60 countries. The university prioritizes diversity and helps international students achieve academic success through the Office of International Student Services. The friendly faculty can help you transition to life in the United States, find your away around campus, and provide information on everything from schedules to student visas. The Office of International Student Services also facilitates an international student club that can help you meet friends who are also transitioning into American culture. This club hosts an international festival each year with food, music and dance from around the world, as well as displays representing many different countries and cultures.

In 2013, Marshall launched INTO Marshall University, a pathway to academic success for international students. Enrolling in an INTO course can help international students with their English skills – the language used in their majors – to help them become comfortable in a new environment before beginning their coursework. Check out this video to see how INTO made a difference for these international Marshall students.

Earn Your Degree: Marshall University prides itself on small class sizes and attentive faculty and staff who can help each student make the most of their academic experience. Marshall offers nearly 200 undergraduate majors, a full-service Marshall Medical Center, the state-of-the-art Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center, and a new Visual Arts Center. Marshall also encourages international students to make the most of on-campus amenities including freetutoring, a writing center, textbook loan program, counseling, health and wellness initiatives, and more.

Get Involved: There are over 200 clubs and organizations for students. Student organizations are a great way to meet new friends and get involved on campus while enjoying something you love. Marshall students can choose from clubs that focus on every kind of passion, from arts and volunteering to religious and professional organizations and social clubs.

Cheer on the Thundering Herd: There are plenty of opportunities to become a part of Marshall University sports and cheer on the Thundering Herd! Attendance to all sporting events is free with your student ID. Marshall student athletes participate in 15 different sports, including soccer, tennis and swimming. Students can also participate in a club sport that takes part in national and regional tournaments, or stay active in the university’s 11,400-square-meter recreation facility with a swimming pool, walking track, fitness equipment and classes. You can also get in the game with Marshall's campus recreation program. Students who join a team on campus can play their favorite sport against other teams of Marshall students.

Find Your Place: All Marshall students are required to live on-campus for their first two years but have the option to live off-campus for the remainder of their college career. When searching for a place to live, many students rely on ApartmentSearch.com. This website helps students to search for an apartment based on distance from campus, while also showing the cost of living, local restaurants, the length of your commute and more.

If your apartment is unfurnished, furniture rental is an economical and convenient way to furnish your home. CORT, the leading provider of furniture rental in the U.S., furnishes thousands of student apartments with everything from beds and sofas to housewares and electronics – all with affordable rental package options.

If you’re looking for small class sizes, a strong international community and a school that encourages research and self-discovery, Marshall University may be the right choice for you. Take a virtual tour of campus and check out the university’s website to get more information on admissions, academics and life at Marshall.
