Why a Technology Degree at UNI Might be what You Need

Why a Technology Degree at UNI Might be what You Need

Apr 17, 2023

For international students interested in technology-based careers, the future is at University of Northern Iowa.

If you haven’t already noticed, technology is advancing quicker than ever. The launch of artificial intelligence, the increase of automation, and the skills employers are looking for as a response to this fast-paced evolution are something that the incoming generation of college students cannot ignore.

For technology-driven minds, there are two programs at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) worth highlighting that focus on preparing students for the future job market: Computer Science and Automation Engineering Technology. Additionally, UNI is known for being a place international students can grow and thrive with unlimited opportunities to diversify and develop in-demand skills. In fact, 94% of UNI students gain experience in their field before graduation.

Computer science at UNI

One of the most popular majors selected by international students at UNI, computer science is directly fulfilling the demand for IT professionals. At UNI, students work closely with professors to explore computing, learn skills they can use in the marketplace, and conduct research that expands the field.

The computer science major at UNI offers a flexible curriculum that lets you specialize in one or more of the following areas: information science, software engineering, systems and traditional computer science.

Automation engineering technology

In the formal announcement of the Automation Engineering Technology program at the University of Northern Iowa, recruitment coordinator and academic advisor Chris Shaw states:

“It is predicted over the next five to 10 years that automation robotics is going to take over about 25 to 30 percent of the total jobs that are available in the industry today. Even though automated robots are predicted to replace human counterparts, someone will still be needed to program these robots and fix them when they break down.”

Students within the program study computer programming, motors, hydraulics, pneumatics, controls systems, instrumentation, and mechatronics to prepare them for the growing demand of understanding automated technologies. Shaw also said that students in the department do not have difficulty finding a job following graduation and that employers often ask him for more interns or graduates than he has to offer.

Build the skills employers want at UNI

As time goes on, skills will be the key to standing out in the workforce. At UNI, opportunities to learn outside the classroom come in the form of easily accessible internships, research, and pursuing double degrees at the undergraduate level. Students can also use minors and certificates to showcase the range of their skills. See the full list of majors available at UNI.

When asked about the success of the international student population at UNI, Dr. Kristi Marchesani, Director of International Admissions and Recruitment, states:

“Our graduates have a great advantage due to the opportunities they have at UNI to engage both in and out of the classroom. I am so amazed at the research, internships, and leadership experiences our students take part in and how they truly grow as a person and professional during their time on campus.”

Last words

Technology is advancing quickly and so are higher-education institutions. Students who are motivated to solve problems and take initiative to develop high-demand skills in the technology space will thrive when given the opportunity. The Computer Science and Automation Engineering Technology programs at UNI offer many opportunities to international students.
