Studying Communications at Glendale Community College

Amanda Araujo from Brazil plans to transfer to a 4-year university after earning her associate degree.
Why did you decide to study in the USA?
For better opportunities in my field and for a cultural experience.
Why did you choose your university/college?
I chose Glendale Community College (GCC) because it is in Los Angeles County, California. A place I’ve always wanted to go to for its diversity and cultural abundance.
Have you taken any classes outside your major that you’ve enjoyed?
Yes, I’ve really enjoyed taking anthropology and astronomy classes at GCC.
What were some struggles you faced and how did you handle it?
I struggled with my math classes, but thankfully GCC provides access to free tutoring on campus.
What is your favorite place on campus?
The library, as it is very welcoming and full of resources to students.
What do you want to do after graduation?
Transfer to a California State University to continue my education.
What are some of your summer plans?
Organize beach cleanups as part of my club ONDA: a club dedicated to helping the environment, especially marine life and the ecosystem. [Fun fact: GCC has more than 50 student clubs and organizations focusing on a variety of interests. Students can also start their own club!]
Does your university/college organize any fun events you’ve attended or are looking forward to?
Yes, GCC organizes lots of fun events on campus and field trips. I’ve attended many events from Taco Tuesdays on campus to field trips to the zoo and to gardens.
Have you traveled around the U.S.? What were some of your favorite places, or where would you like to go?
I’ve traveled to San Francisco, California, and Utah with GCC and had a great experience! I’d like to see Alaska when I get a chance to.
What are some of your favorite memories from your time as a student?
Making friends on campus, experiencing different cultures, get-togethers, and learning new subjects that were surprisingly interesting.
Describe your experience in three words.
For the books.
What would you tell students who are considering studying in the USA?
Go for it! I have yet to meet someone who didn’t say they had a great experience coming to the U.S. to study. You’ll learn so much and grow as a person. Get ready to be challenged in the best way, while adding new memories and creating beautiful experiences you’ll never forget!
