Preparing for a Master’s at UT’s English Language Center
Mohammed Alshaalan from Saudi Arabia is improving his English at the University of Texas at Austin.
Why did you decide to study in the USA?
I decided to study in the USA because of the good education here. The University of Texas at Austin (UT) is one of the best universities in the world.
I have a bachelor’s degree in law from my country, and now I am planning to study for my master’s degree. First, I need to improve my English more [at UT’s English Language Center (ELC)].
What were some struggles you faced and how did you handle it?
At first, I had a lot of troubles because I was living alone, but now I have made a lot of friends, and they make me feel like I am at home with my family.
What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place in West Campus is the “six pack” [a green expanse of lawn lined with oak trees where students study and socialize, flanked by six red-roofed buildings on each side]. I often go there at night, sit on the grass, and watch the sky.
What do you want to do after graduation?
After I graduate, I just want to be successful in my life and help people around me.
Have you traveled around the U.S.? What were some of your favorite places?
Yes, I have traveled around almost all of the U.S., and this is not the first time I have come to the U.S. The first time was in 2012 with my family, and every two years, I come to visit. My favorite two states are Texas and Florida.
In Austin, I love to go to Sixth Street to enjoy time with friends. I also go to The Domain [a large park-like shopping center], and my favorite place is Franklin, one of the best barbecue restaurants I have eaten at.
What is one of your favorite memories from your time as a student?
One of my favorite memories is when UT gave me a scholarship and the chance to study another semester.
Describe your experience in three words
My experience in three words would be: fun, hard, and worth it.
What would you tell students who are considering studying in the USA?
To students thinking about studying in the USA, I would say do it! The experience will make your education better and give you great memories and friends.
