Why Santa Monica College?

"Santa Monica College has the best reputation," - Justin explains. "As a student coming from a foreign country, it wasn't an easy thing, but I saw after my research that Santa Monica College has great student service, great professors, and different classes that I can take." This blend of top-notch academics and comprehensive support convinced him that SMC was the ideal opportunity to begin his studies independently.

Academic Journey and Mentorship

Inspired by his father’s passion for computer science, Justin decided to follow a similar path. "I was inspired to take Computer Science because my dad also took Computer Science and it was fascinating to me," he recalls. Yet, Justin emphasizes that success involves more than hard work alone. "Working hard does not make you succeed—you need mentors to give you feedback, counselors who can discuss your education, your courses, and your grading," he adds.

A significant part of his positive experience at Santa Monica College was the exceptional guidance he received from his counselor, Jose Hernandez. "My counselor named Jose is the best. I got accepted on the internship Jose recommended," Justin shares, highlighting how Jose's expertise as Associate Dean of Outreach, Onboarding & Student Engagement at SMC profoundly impacted his academic path.

Transfer Success

Because of the strong foundation he built at Santa Monica College, Justin was able to transfer to UC Berkeley. "I got accepted to UCI all campuses, and I decided to go to UC Berkeley because of the strong foundation I have at Santa Monica College," he explains. With this solid base, Justin is now looking forward to a future where his passion for computer science drives him to develop an AI algorithm for cancer diagnosis—a goal that reflects the limitless opportunities SMC provides.
