How Golden West College Prepares International Students for Top Universities
Yusun Lee didn’t choose to study abroad on a whim. A born artist from South Korea, she had a clear vision for her future: to be recognized not just for what she could do, but for who she was as a creator. While her talent was undeniable, South Korea’s rigid academic system focused more on technical execution than artistic identity. Lee longed to be seen—and she knew she had to leave home to make that happen.
“I constantly got C’s in Korea because I used bold lines. I was told to ‘use soft lines to get an A,’” Lee recalls. “But I didn’t want to change my style just to fit a standard.”

Determined to forge a new path, she set her sights on the U.S.—specifically California State University, Long Beach (CSULB)—to pursue her dream of becoming a visual designer. But first, she needed a strong foundation. That search led her to Golden West College (GWC) in Huntington Beach, California, where she found far more than she expected: a supportive international community, a thriving art department, and a seamless transfer pathway to her dream university.

A Strategic First Step to University Success
Lee initially chose Golden West College for two key reasons: its excellent International Student Program and its robust art department.
“The international student office always looks after international students and communicates with them,” says Lee. “They are patient and understand that international pupils do not speak English well. These points struck a chord with me.”
GWC also offered a wide range of transferable art classes, making it the perfect academic launchpad. But what truly set it apart was the quality of its professors.
“I discovered that every professor makes basic learners feel at ease and shows us that learning art can be enjoyable,” she explains. “Now I’m getting A’s without changing anything. Professors say, ‘I can see your style,’ and that makes me proud. Thanks to GWC, I will never abandon my artistic style.”
More Than a Beautiful Campus
Located in Huntington Beach, also known as Surf City, GWC’s coastal location first caught Lee’s eye through vibrant campus photos. But it wasn’t just the blue skies and modern facilities that won her over—it was the welcoming environment. From day one, she was encouraged to connect, create, and grow.
One of her earliest memories was a College-hosted trip to The Cheesecake Factory, where she bonded with peers and began building a new life. “I made friends right away,” she recalls.
Academic Excellence + Financial Support = Confidence
Lee’s commitment to excellence paid off. Not only did she thrive in her art courses, but she also earned US$1,250 in scholarships from three different awards designed to support international students.
“Scholarships allowed me to concentrate on my studies without worrying about money,” she says.
Even when the COVID-19 pandemic forced her return to South Korea, GWC never let go of its support. Staff stayed in touch, provided visa updates, arranged tutoring, and hosted International Student Conversations via Zoom to keep students engaged from afar—even with a 17-hour time difference.
Seamless Transfer to a Top University
Lee has since completed her Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design at California State University, Long Beach, one of the top public universities in the U.S. for design. Her journey began at Golden West College, where the transfer process was smooth and well-supported thanks to GWC’s Transfer Center, which provides hands-on guidance at every step—from application preparation to connecting students with university representatives.
“I applied to CSU Long Beach, Fullerton, and Los Angeles—and I got into all three,” she shares proudly.
Golden West College’s strong track record of helping students transfer to top universities is no coincidence—it’s part of the school’s DNA. Whether students are interested in art, business, STEM, or health sciences, GWC’s Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs) and dedicated academic advising are designed to help international students stay on track, transfer successfully, and reach their academic goals with confidence.
From GWC to a BA in Graphic Design at CSULB
Yusun graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from California State University, Long Beach, with dreams of becoming a UX (User Experience) designer—and it all started at Golden West College.
During her time at GWC, Yusun discovered how design could move beyond art and into real-world impact. Inspired by her professors and the practical applications of visual communication, she found her passion for graphic design and user-centered thinking.
“Computers are used in almost all businesses, and my professors always reminded me that design is based on art,” she shares. “I want to design experiences that are easy and comfortable for future generations—especially people like my grandparents who struggle with technology.”
Today, Yusun is using her creativity not just to express herself, but to design thoughtful, inclusive experiences that make technology more accessible for everyone.
Why International Students Choose GWC
