From Vietnam to UCLA: Nancy’s Journey in Health Sciences

When Nancy Duong moved to the U.S. from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, she knew two things: she wanted to pursue health sciences, and she wanted a place where she wouldn’t feel lost in a crowd. That’s exactly what she found at GWC.

“After finishing high school here, I chose GWC for the strong curriculum and smaller class sizes,” she explains. “It helped me reach out for help easily and really connect with my professors.”

Nancy majored in Biology, building both her academic and lab skills to prepare for transfer. Her favorite classes? The Organic Chemistry series, thanks to the encouragement and empathy of professors like Kay Dutz. “She never stopped supporting me—even when I felt like giving up.”

With help from the Transfer Student Center and International Student Program (ISP), Nancy was admitted to UCLA to pursue a degree in Biochemistry. She also took advantage of Optional Practical Training (OPT) to gain real-world experience in healthcare settings.

“GWC helped me grow academically and personally. I left feeling ready to tackle anything.”

From Germany to California to Porsche: Maja’s Global Advantage

Maja Overbeck grew up in Germany, but a family road trip down the California coast changed everything.

“I Googled Huntington Beach and saw people surfing, sunny weather, friendly vibes—it looked like a dream,” she says. “GWC just stood out to me.”

That instinct paid off. At GWC, Maja got involved in the International Student Office, helping new students settle in and find their footing—just like she did. “My supervisors supported me every step of the way and gave me the confidence to grow, both as a student and as a leader.”

She didn’t stop there. Maja made close friendships, traveled with roommates to Arizona, San Francisco, and Hawaii, and soaked in the full college experience.

“We made unforgettable memories—beach days, sleepovers, road trips. It was everything I hoped for.”

In July, Maja begins a six-month internship at Porsche-MHP in Stuttgart, Germany. She credits her GWC experience for helping her stand out in the interview process.

“Studying abroad boosts your resume. It shows language skills, cultural awareness, and independence—everything companies are looking for.”
