From India to California: How California State University, Chico Helped Dev Kachiwala Turn Big Dreams Into Reality

From India to California: How California State University, Chico Helped Dev Kachiwala Turn Big Dreams Into Reality

Aug 28, 2025

When Dev Kachiwala started college during the COVID-19 pandemic, his classes at California State University, Chico were… at midnight. From his hometown of Surat, India, he logged into online lectures that lasted until 6 a.m.

That kind of schedule would make anyone think twice, but Dev saw it as the first step toward his dream of studying in the U.S.

After a long semester of online classes, he finally stepped foot on California State University, Chico's campus in fall 2021—ready for everything college life had to offer.

Finding His People

One of Dev’s first stops was the International Education and Global Engagement (IEGE) office, the same team that had supported him from afar during online classes.

That connection led to friendships and opportunities right away. Dev became a Global Ally, then an International Student Ambassador, helping other students adjust to campus life just like he did.

He also joined the Indian Student Association, the largest international student group at Chico State, and even became vice president and president over the years.

From there, he kept saying “yes” to opportunities: Resident Advisor, Student Orientation Leader, and eventually Director of Academic Affairs for Associated Students Government Affairs, an elected position where he represented the voices of other students.

“The support I’ve gotten from my fellow students has been amazing,” Dev said. “I felt they were putting me in a place where I could represent them. It was challenging, but I’ve learned so much and am grateful for the opportunity to have a voice.”

Leveling Up Academically

Dev majored in Chemistry, and one thing that stood out was how much his professors cared about student success.

His professors took notice too.

“Dev showed grit and determination that will serve him well in all his future endeavors,” said Randy Miller, a professor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. “He asked insightful questions and always pushed himself to do his best.”

What’s Next for Dev?

After graduating this spring, Dev is heading to the University of Southern California (USC) for a master’s degree in pharmaceutical science. His long-term goal? A PhD and eventually his own pharmaceutical company.

Why CSU Chico?

Dev’s story is just one example of how Chico State supports international students:

  • You’re not alone: Support teams like those in IEGE help you find your community from day one.

  • A chance to lead: Student clubs, campus jobs, and leadership roles are open to everyone.

  • Professors who care: Faculty want you to succeed—not just pass.

  • A true college town: Chico is safe, welcoming, and has a strong sense of community.

“Younger students look up to Dev and want to follow in his footsteps,” said Cindy McKay, an advisor and immigration specialist with IEGE. “He’s a true example of what international students can accomplish at Chico State.”
