Meet Alessandra: From Panama City to Maryville University

My name is Alessandra, and I hail from the vibrant city of Panama City, Panama. Currently, I am in my junior year at Maryville University, where I am pursuing a major in Management Information Systems. Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine, fueled by my love for English classes and the belief that the United States is a land of opportunities. 

I chose to transfer to Maryville University due to its outstanding Computer Science program and the supportive guidance it offers to international students, making the admission process a breeze. My journey so far has been marked by growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences.

Embracing Campus Life

Transitioning to campus life as a transfer student presented its challenges. Initially, I felt a bit out of place and struggled to keep pace with my peers. However, I made it a priority to connect with my professors and engage with the various job opportunities available for international students. 

These connections not only helped me navigate my new environment but also fostered a sense of belonging within the university community. My favorite spot on campus is outdoors, where I often spread a blanket on the grass, enjoy the fresh air, and tackle my homework amidst the beautiful greenery that surrounds Maryville.

Future Aspirations and Community Involvement

Looking ahead, I am excited about the prospect of staying in the United States to work. I love St. Louis’ multicultural scene and warm community. This coming summer, I plan to volunteer at the Hispanic Festival, reconnect with my family in Panama, and continue exploring the hidden gems of St. Louis. I am eager to immerse myself in the local culture by attending sports games, particularly hockey or soccer, and to become an active participant in the vibrant school spirit at Maryville.

Reflecting on My Journey

One of my favorite memories as an international student was the surprise visit from my family during my community college graduation. This heartfelt moment represented the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, and having my loved ones there made it all the more special. 

My experience in the United States has been a rollercoaster of challenges, growth, and self-discovery. While homesickness can be overwhelming at times, the opportunity to learn from others and explore a new culture has been profoundly rewarding. Ultimately, my journey here has opened doors not only for myself but also for those who share similar passions and dreams.
