During the current pandemic, doctors have earned the title: ‘frontline warriors’. This is due to their dedication, perseverance and commitment to helping COVID-19 patients recover, often at personal cost.

The medical profession requires dedication and hard work, and many people choose to pursue this field because they have a calling to help others. For some, it is about an innate sense of compassion or the need to give back to society. For others, it can be their yearning to go deeper into medical research.

If you are an aspiring medical student then something must have motivated you to take this path. Learn from practicing physicians why they choose this career, and read excerpts from Medical University of the Americas (MUA) students who are currently training at this medical school.

Why do people become doctors?

When students apply in medical school they are asked an important question: ‘why do you want to become a doctor?’ The answer to this question is a determining factor for admission into the school and hence a pivotal part of any student’s journey.

Medical school prerequisites are not limited to good MCAT scores and grades; you need to demonstrate your desire to excel, as well as display a high level of tenacity and perseverance. These traits truly showcase your suitability and passion for this field. Here is a list of reasons that have inspired others on this journey:

Efficiently helping others

Health dictates how we function and live our lives. Disease and injury can have a disastrous impact on our overall quality of life. One of the reasons why being a doctor is so rewarding is that they restore sick people back to good health.

Naveria Ammad, a student at Caribbean medical school MUA, has conducted an extensive study to prove that health issues such as fibromyalgia, which is highly prevalent in US adults, needs to be combated with a mix of pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment.

The goal of the research was to significantly improve health conditions through a multidisciplinary treatment plan. The continuous effort required to successfully  treat a chronic illness, and the desire to bring relief to patients are among the major reasons why many choose to be a doctor.

Taking steps towards disease prevention

The work of a doctor is not just limited to treating patients who come in for a consultation. They also take measures to eradicate diseases and look for more enhanced methods of treatment.

This is evident in a research paper written by another Caribbean medical school student, Tanya Gupta, who studies the workplace and training experience of workers who have contracted the skin disease dermatitis.

A survey was conducted for the purpose of helping improve prevention practices and address loopholes that can reduce the contraction of this disease. A larger goal here was an enhanced training program and even policy changes that can benefit workers and keep them safe.

Hence, your desire to be a part of the medical fraternity can be influenced by a desire to help segments of society and bring them better health facilities.

Improving the quality of life

Doctors also nurse you back to health and act as an instrument of change who can guide you towards an enhanced way of living. This includes a diet and exercise regime that is scientifically studied and helps improve overall health.

Laurie Y Hung, a student at Caribbean medical university MUA, has conducted enormous research into exercise programs that can help those suffering from chronic lower back pain.

Due to the large population of Chronic Lower Back Pain (CLBP) patients in America and across the world, a nonpharmacological method of treatment that includes exercise, yoga, stretching, self-care and more can be long lasting and much more beneficial.

Medical aspirants find their calling in many unique ways and each contribute to society by providing beneficial treatments and innovative health practices. Irrespective of what your motivation on this path is, the Medical University of Americas will help you in essaying your journey towards becoming a doctor in every possible way.

MUA models its curriculum on US and Canadian medical schools, and focuses on teaching students in small classrooms providing maximum interaction with their professors. This ensures that each individual gets the required attention and is thoroughly prepared for a career in medicine.
