By Brianna Burrows

Summer is an excellent time to learn English and the USA offers a wide range of summer courses to learn English.  Many schools, colleges and universities offer summer English language programs at affordable rates. Some programs are as short as four weeks and some are as long as 13 weeks. Highlighted below are six programs to study English this summer. For a full list of schools, college, and universities offering summer programs in the United States, click here.

Pace University

Pace University has two campuses in the state of New York, one located in New York City and the other located just north of the city in Westchester. The English Language Institute provides course for international students to learn English at a level that will be required for entry to the university’s degree programs. The English Language Institute has two summer sessions, each six weeks long. You can take both summer sessions for a total of 12 weeks.

LaGuardia Community College

LaGuardia Community College’s The English Language Center (TELC) is the largest non-credit English language program in New York City. The English Language Center offers full-time and part-time English language programs during the summer. The part-time program offers two different test preparation courses. They also offer specialized evening programs in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. There is also a Saturday program in the summer.

The University of Texas at Austin ESL Services offers two unique program: the English Language Program (ELP) and the Academic English Program (AEP). The ELP offers international students seven different levels to begin their studies based on their English skills. This program is to help prepare international students to enter a college or university. The AEP is created for students who already have a bachelor’s degree in which the student is preparing to enter a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Each program offers two sessions during the summer, a shorter session of approximately five weeks and a longer session of 10 weeks.

College of the Desert

College of the Desert’s Intensive English Academy (IEA) offers students an eight week accelerated summer program. The program is 32 hours per week total. The program is divided into four areas of focus: reading, writing, oral communication, and grammar. The summer session can be combined with the early fall session in late August.

California State University Sonoma
