Why did you decide to study in the USA?
The United States is known for its higher education opportunities. Also, studying in the United States allows me to experience the diverse American culture, helps me grow personally and academically. At the same time, I learned how to adapt to a different society and how to communicate more effectively.
Why did you choose SHSU?
SHSU is located in a calm small town but very close to the Woodlands and Houston, and offered me a good studying environment also a convenient living environment. SHSU also has a very friendly, supportive learning environment. It is great for an international student like me to learn and adapt to a different culture.
What do you like the best about SHSU?
I have been studying at SHSU for four years. Every professor I had here is full of knowledge, willing to help students out, and truly supportive of student’s dream. As an international student, I have received a lot of help from the Office of International Programs as well. All the advisors and faculty here care about us like a family member.
What do you miss a lot?
I miss my family in China a lot, also the real Chinese food.
How has English Language Institute helped you handle your current university studies?
I was in the English Language Institute program for a year, which is three terms. The English Language Institute program not only helped me with my English, but also gave me a time buffer to get used to the study mode in the USA before I started my undergrad study. The English Language Institute program trained us comprehensively in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The writing classes really helped me learn how to write professionally in college, and this has helped me a lot in the current university studies.
What was your biggest surprise?
My biggest surprise in SHSU is that SHSU is not a big campus, but it has a very integrated campus facility. We recently just built a new students’ Health Center, and a new student entertainment center is in contemplation.
How have you adjusted to a different educational system?
I think I adjusted to a different educational system very well. I now have a 3.5 GPA and two scholarships. It should not be a problem for most international students as well, since the USA is such a diverse society. Everyone can find a place to fit in.
What are your activities?
Thanks to SHSU’s great campus facility, my activities are varied. I have been taking Zumba classes at the SHSU REC center for two years now. It helps me maintain a good physical activity level and fills my spare time. SHSU has a good football team as well. I enjoyed attending the football games to cheer for the SHSU team a lot.
How easy or difficult was making friends?
I think it is easy to make friends at SHSU. SHSU is located in Texas, and Texas is known for their hospitality and friendliness. As long as you are willing to step out and talk to people, making friends in SHSU will be a very easy thing to do.
What is your advice to other students who are considering a U.S. education?
Believe in yourself and have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful or happy.
