Study at a Top-Ranked University
in Beautiful Coastal Maine, U.S.A.
The University of New England
The University of New England is a private, coeducational, comprehensive university with two distinctive campuses located in one of the most desirable locations in the Eastern United States-the southern coastal beach communities of Maine.
UNE has a strong national reputation and is ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top tier among northern universities. The University's mission is to educate men and women to advance the quality of human life and the environment.
We offer quality academic programs that lead to associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees through our College of Arts and Sciences, College of Health Professions, College of Osteopathic Medicine, and College of Pharmacy. Both campuses offer many opportunities to enhance experiences outside of the classroom including athletics, clubs and organizations, student government, cultural and fine arts events programs, and outdoor recreation.
A Great U.S. Location
UNE has two campuses in southern Maine. The University Campus is on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in Biddeford. This beautiful 540-acre campus with more than 4,000 sq. ft. of waterfront is situated between the coastal towns of Old Orchard Beach and Kennebunk, just 90 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. Biddeford is a small, safe community of about 20,000 people.
The Westbrook College Campus is located 20 minutes north in a quiet residential area of Portland. This campus, designated a national historic district, has a central green surrounded by classic New England brick buildings. Portland is a vibrant city with a metropolitan population of around 250,000 people that offers a variety of cultural and entertainment options for out students.
Intensive English Language Program
The University of New England offers an Intensive English Language Program (IELP) for international students seeking admission to our undergraduate and graduate programs who do not meet our minimum English proficiency standards. The Intensive English Language Program is offered through a 4-week session during the summer and 15-week sessions throughout the academic year. Students will be able to learn from qualified instructors in small classes located in a safe environment on an American university campus.
The intensive English classes meet 20 hours per week and provide instruction in: Reading, Writing, Vocabulary, Grammar, Listening, Speaking, and Pronunciation. Students are expected to use the language laboratory and library for homework assignments and personal study for up to 10 hours per week.
Placement in courses will be based on an entrance examination, a writing sample, and an informal interview. There will be up to three levels of intensive English offered in each session. Class sizes will range from 8 to 15 students per class. Efforts will be made to keep the class size small for effective English language instruction.
IELP Highlights
- 4-week sessions offered each summer and 15-week sessions during the academic year
- Full use of University facilities
- Small classes taught by expert faculty
- Prepare for U.S. college study
- Conditional admission to UNE available to qualified students
Academics: Focus on Practical Learning
The University of New England's philosophy of education emphasizes the quality of instruction and the practical application of academic material. More than 85% of the full-time faculty have the highest degree in their fields. The 13:1 student to teacher ratio guarantees close faculty-student interaction.
UNE has 40-plus undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
The College of Arts and Sciences on the Biddeford campus offers a variety of professional and liberal arts and sciences degree programs. The Westbrook College Campus in Portland houses the College of Health Professions, which prepares health-care students to work collaboratively to promote the best possible care, and our new College of Pharmacy. Maine's only medical school, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, also on the Biddeford campus, emphasizes the education of primary care physicians. The degree earned is a doctorate of osteopathic medicine (D.O.).
UNE is fast becoming a significant research institution, with an emphasis on biomedical, neuroscience, applied health and marine science research.
Campus Life: Great Facilities, Good Fun
Both campuses have excellent resources for studying and living, including multiple science, cultural, residential and recreational facilities. Two libraries provide outstanding collections of more than 200,000 books and periodicals, and access via the Internet to many computer data bases.
UNE provides its students with many opportunities for activities, athletics, clubs, entertainment, involvement and leadership. We also offer a wide range of services including career counseling, dental and health clinics, learning support services, multicultural services, and personal counseling.
