University of California, Santa Barbara

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), one of the ten campuses of the University of California system, maintains a world-wide reputation for academic excellence, and for the fact that its faculty includes five Nobel Prize recipients. As a student at UCSB Extension, you will be part of an internationally recognized program, with excellent resources, innovative teaching methods, flexible curriculum and academic services that offer an exceptional experience in a safe, charming location. A recent Newsweek article stated: "If there is a more beautiful beach campus in the U.S.A., I have not seen it!"

Programs

Study options for international students at UCSB Extension include English Language Programs (ELP), Professional Academic Programs (PAP), and University Immersion Program (UIP). Many students enroll first for the English Language Program, and then later enroll for the PAP or the UIP. An "Academic Support Program" acts as a bridge between full time English Language study, and full time academic content study.

English Language Programs (ELP): The ELP offers two exciting, high interest English language preparation programs for international students: The 20-hour per week "Intensive English Language Program" offers English Language courses at various levels. The "Academic Support Program" (ASP) provides an invaluable bridge between full-time language study and full-time content-based programs. These programs are designed to prepare students for their academic studies and for their professional careers, and are offered year-round in 4-week, 6-week, 10-week, 20-week, or 30-week options.

Professional Academic Programs (PAP) are designed to provide information relevant to today's global economy. These programs offer high-caliber courses for those who want to further their education, apply business theory to real business situations, enhance their careers, and network with students from other countries. Professional Academic Programs maintain the rigorous academic standards of the University of California, Santa Barbara and are offered in a convenient, intensive, format across four 10-week sessions throughout the year. Included are Global Business & Management, Global Marketing, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and Internship Experience (Paid and Without Pay).

The University Immersion Program (UIP) is an academic study program that provides the opportunity for international students to enroll in UCSB academic and/or professional development courses in many different disciplines. This program offers an excellent way to experience college life in the U.S., and the credits earned may be transferred to universities around the world or used to complement your professional goals.

Services and Facilities

UCSB Extension offers a full range of supportive services including academic advising, immigration assistance, accident and medical insurance, access to e-mail and the Internet, and free local bus transportation. Help with housing arrangements and excursions to points of educational and cultural interest are also available. Many programs are located at the University's Storke Center, three kilometers from the heart of the UCSB campus. The Center includes modern classroom and computer facilities. Participants also have access to the University of California, Santa Barbara library resources, recreational facilities, and housing accommodations.

Housing

Students may choose between four housing options: a home stay with an American host; University residence halls; University-owned apartment housing; and private apartments. A pre-arranged Housing Fee of $150 is required for placement with a host family, residence hall, and University operated apartments.
