We are committed to providing the best English language instruction, academic preparation, cross-cultural learning experiences, and extracurricular activities available anywhere. Surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Rocky Mountains, in the safe, sophisticated, but friendly small college town of Boulder, we believe that the learning environment is ideal. If you come to Boulder, we are sure that you will learn much and enjoy your studies.

Program Overview

The International English Center (IEC) offers a unique opportunity to learn the English language in a stimulating academic atmosphere. The year-round intensive English program, fully accredited by CEA, features English instruction, combined with orientation to university customs, academic preparation, and an introduction to life in the United States. There are 5 eight-week sessions. The summer session features a second intake providing a four-week program for those with limited time. Students are tested on arrival and are placed in classes appropriate to their proficiency in English.

Curriculum

The IEC curriculum is particularly suitable for students who are preparing to enter a college or university in the United States, but it is also suitable for others simply interested in improving their English through intensive study. Classes are offered at four proficiency levels, Basic, Intermediate 1 and 2, and Advanced. In twenty-three hours of class work each week, attention is given to all the language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and to the study skills necessary for graduate and undergraduate work in universities in the United States. Ample time is given in classes for communication practice in English and on the academic skills necessary for the new TOEFL iBT. There is an option for qualified students to pursue business English. Opportunities are provided for students at the advanced level to participate in an academic course at the University.

Special Programs

The IEC regularly contracts with various groups to provide specialized English and educational experiences. These include a Global Business Communication program and programs of language and culture for university-aged groups, and others. For more information, contact Charl Norloff, Special Programs Coordinator.

The University's Center for Advanced Engineering and Technology Education (CAETE) offers Master's degrees and certificates in engineering, computer science, telecommunications, and management, serving on-campus students, distance learners, and working professionals. Specialties of the CAETE Center are Aerospace Engineering and Telecommunications. For information please visit the CAETE website.

Faculty

The IEC's instructors are professional, experienced teachers who specialize in the teaching of English as a second language. They have M.A. or Ph.D. degrees, are native or near-native speakers, and have taught English in the U.S. and/or overseas.

Computer Labs+

The IEC has two computer labs with 20 new PC computers each, all with Internet access and Microsoft Office Suite. The IEC also has an audio lab with many materials available for student use.

After-Class Activities at the IEC

The IEC considers it valuable for students to enjoy recreational activities outside the classroom. IEC students have opportunities to meet with conversation partners and participate in conversation club. In addition, the IEC regularly hosts various activities such as parties, movies, field trips, cultural and sporting events, and one all-day activity per session such as skiing, horseback riding and hiking in the mountains, and white-water rafting.
