School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City is an established leader and innovator in the education of artists. From its inception in 1947, the faculty has been comprised of professionals working in the arts and art-related fields. SVA provides an environment that nurtures creativity, inventiveness and experimentation, enabling students to develop a strong sense of identity and a clear direction of purpose.

One of the largest independent colleges of art in the United States, SVA currently enrolls approximately 3,750 students from 47 states and 50 countries in 11 undergraduate and 10 graduate degree programs.

Accreditation

School of Visual Arts is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. SVA is also an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and is a member of the International Association of Independent Schools for Art and Design (AIAS) and the National Portfolio Day Association (NPDA).

Culture, Graphic Design and Fine Arts in New York Summer Program

School of Visual Arts (SVA) Culture, Graphic Design and Fine Arts in New York Summer Program is designed for international college students who want to learn more about fine arts or graphic design; experience American culture by living and studying in New York City; and have the opportunity to enhance their English skills with an English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Studio courses are taught by current SVA undergraduate faculty members, all of whom are also working professional fine artists or designers in New York City.

On evenings and weekends students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of organized activities, including guided tours to the world famous Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and Metropolitan museum, Broadway musicals and plays, movie nights, walking tours of NYC, exploring Times Square and Central Park, etc. Students also receive two studio credits for successful completion of the summer program.

Program Dates

Program begins in July of each year.

Housing

On-campus, double-room accommodation is available for this program.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed at least one semester of undergraduate (university-level) coursework, have some background in art or design, and have a minimum score of 61 on the TOEFL iBT, or an equivalent level of English proficiency.

Application Deadline

The deadline to apply from overseas is April of each year. Applicants currently residing in the United States may apply after the deadline, but should contact SVA directly for further information.

Creative Educators Summer Workshop in New York

This unique, one-week workshop offered through the Office of Programs for International Students is for high school (secondary school) teachers of art currently residing outside of the United States. This workshop is designed for art educators who are interested in updating their teaching skills and further developing their creative abilities through classroom study, hands-on projects, field trips and interactive exchange with fellow program participants. Issues of curriculum design, use of materials, current trends and museum education will be explored. Following the workshop, teachers will be able to bring new ideas, renewed energy and an expanded world-view to their classrooms.

Program Dates

Program begins August of each year.

Housing

On-campus accommodation is available for this program. The regular cost of accommodation ($450/week) will be waived for accepted applicants.

Eligibility

Applicants must be currently employed as a teacher of art at the high school (secondary school) level in a country other than the United States. Applicants who are not native speakers of English should be able to demonstrate an English proficiency level equivalent to a 61 TOEFL iBT score (173 TOEFL CBT).
