Since 1975, Studies in American Language (SAL) has continuously offered high-quality English language instruction that meets the professional, academic, and practical needs of its students. Classes are designed for those students planning to attend an American college or university and for others who wish to improve their English communication skills for professional or personal reasons. In addition to a challenging academic curriculum, SAL also provides students with direct exposure to the American culture through field trips and activities.

Located on the San Jose State University campus in the city's thriving downtown area, Studies in American Language (SAL) offers students the excitement of studying at a large metropolitan campus where many cultures and nationalities meet. SAL students are within walking distance of many trendy restaurants, parks, movie cinemas, museums, shopping facilities, banks, hotels and theaters. SAL students will find sightseeing to be very easy with the convenient free public transportation with their SJSU ID card the comfortable climate of the Silicon Valley to be mild year round with 300 days of sunshine. The beaches of Santa Cruz and Carmel and the cityscapes of San Francisco and Berkeley are within an hour of campus. In the winter season, skiing and other mountain sports are approximately 3 hours from San Jose.

Founded in 1857, SJSU is not only the oldest state university in California, but one of the top regional public universities in the western U.S. Located on 154 acres in downtown San José, the SJSU Main Campus features more than 50 major buildings on 19 city blocks in downtown San Jose. Approximately 30,000 SJSU students choose from more than 134 bachelor's and master's degree programs. SJSU is famous for its nationally recognized Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Art, and Graduate Occupational Therapy departments. A variety of undergraduate and graduate College of Business programs also attract international professionals to Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley firms employ more graduates from SJSU than from any other university in the nation.

SAL has 8 levels of academic instruction from beginner to high-advanced. Students can choose from TOEFL preparation, business, or communication electives. After class, students can join Conversation Club, Language Exchange or community activities for more English practice. SAL also offers MBA preparation programs and SJSU concurrent enrollment for advanced students who want the experience of a semester of university study. The average class size is 14 students.

Full-time faculty hold Master's degrees related to teaching English to speakers of other languages. All teachers have years of experience in creating academic and communicative courses.
