With 12,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students, the University of Rhode Island (URI) has students from throughout the United States and 22 different countries. Located in the state of Rhode Island on the East Coast of the United States, the University has a safe, rural campus only 10 minutes from the ocean. We're also within easy reach of major cities, just one hour from Boston and less than three hours from New York City.

URI has seven degree-granting colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Human Science and Services, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Environment & Life Sciences; there is also a Graduate School and the Graduate School of Oceanography located on Narragansett Bay.

Undergraduate degrees offered include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, and Bachelor of Music. URI also offers degrees in International Engineering and International Business. Students may select from a number of minors to supplement their major and develop additional skills. As a Land Grant, Sea Grant, and Urban Grant institution, the University maintains a balanced commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and public service.

URI's commitment to educational excellence offers you more than just a degree-we provide internships, study abroad, and service learning opportunities that give you real-world experiences in nearly every one of our more than 80 majors. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 19 to 1, URI offers the personal attention of nationally known faculty and the resources of a large university with a small school atmosphere.

Twenty-one percent of last year's URI freshmen graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school class, and many of our student-athletes are also on the Dean's List. The Honors Program, Center for Student Leadership Development, and Office of Career Services provide you with additional opportunities to excel. URI was recently cited by the Princeton Review as a "college with a conscience" because of our many service learning opportunities.

At URI, there are more than 100 on-campus student organizations, including a number of organizations for international students. URI also offers more than more than 30 intercollegiate varsity teams, intramural, and club sports. Our Fine Arts Center offers a full range of concerts, art exhibits, and plays, and the Ryan Center is a great place to cheer on the basketball team or enjoy concerts by nationally known performers.

Ninety five percent of our freshmen live on campus in the newly renovated residence halls or in our Living-Learning Communities for students interested in the same major. All rooms come equipped with 94-channel cable TV, URI Movie Channel, URI Information Channel, and a 30-MB Internet connection. While most students live on campus, some choose to rent rooms or houses near the ocean. On-campus options for upperclassmen include apartment-style housing, Living-Learning Communities, sororities, and fraternities. URI also has a host family program for international students.

When it comes to meals, you can choose a plan that fits your needs: Campus Standard, Campus Plus, or Campus Premiere. All offer unlimited visits to Butterfield Dining Hall and Mainfare at Hope Commons, but some plans include bonuses for guests, or extra dining dollars for URI's other dining halls like the Ram's Den in the Memorial Union. The new Hope Commons stays open until 2 a.m. and offers international food stations, smoothies, a pizza bar, omelet station, and wireless Internet access. You can also open a Ram account for additional purchases at URI retail shops and nearby off-campus merchants.

The University of Rhode Island is committed to promoting international education and intercultural exchange by integrating a global perspective throughout our programs and campus life. URI holds the distinction of being one of only a few universities in the United States to host the Confucius Institute, which promotes the study of Chinese culture and language. The Office of International Students and Scholars provides important resources for all international students and serves as a meeting place for social gatherings.
