The UniversityNorthern Kentucky University is located in a safe, suburban area just across the Ohio River from the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. NKU was founded in 1968 and is the newest of Kentucky's eight state universities. The atmosphere of the campus is futuristic, emphasizing a high-quality education by supporting the liberal arts. Twelve major buildings are of modern, contemporary architectural design and are set on 300 acres of rolling countryside. NKU has an enrollment of more than 14,000 students from 43 states and 91 countries and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. The Salmon P. Chase College of Law is accredited by both the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools.There are more than 170 student organizations. NKU competes in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference. Intercollegiate sports are offered for men and women in basketball, cross-country, soccer, tennis and golf; for men in baseball; and for women in fast-pitch softball and volleyball. Intramural activities are basketball, flag football, racquetball, soccer, softball, volleyball, cornhole, dodgeball, sports trivia, tennis and golf.
LocationNKU is located in the largest metropolitan area of any state university in Kentucky. It is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 27 and Interstates 275 and 471 in Highland Heights, Kentucky, 8 miles southeast of Cincinnati, Ohio. NKU is only 60 miles from Dayton, 79 miles from Lexington, 93 miles from Louisville, and 114 miles from Indianapolis. While the immediate surroundings are suburban, NKU is part of the metropolitan area of greater Cincinnati.
Majors and DegreesNorthern Kentucky University awards the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Bachelor of Social Work degrees. NKU also offers preprofessional programs, secondary education teacher certification, and the Associate of Applied Science degree.Preprofessional programs are available in dentistry, engineering, forestry, law, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, veterinary medicine, and wildlife management. In addition, the University offers majors, minors, and areas of discipline for secondary education teacher certification.

Academic ProgramNKU operates on a semester calendar. To receive a bachelor's degree, students must complete a minimum of 128 credit hours. At least 64 credit hours are required for the associate degree.The University offers a variety of career planning and placement, internship, independent study, work-study, and cooperative education programs. There is also a Health Counseling and Prevention Services Office available. Other programs include an honors program, a program that allows for the dual enrollment of high school students, a program where students can combine their career interests in the liberal arts and engineering fields, and University 101, a semester-long orientation program for freshmen. NKU recognizes credit earned through the Advanced Placement Program and the general, subject, and institutional tests of the College-Level Examination Program. A maximum of 45 credit hours may be applied toward the bachelor's degree from the AP and CLEP examinations. The International Baccalaureate Program allows students to earn credit in science, mathematics, psychology, and languages.
Off-Campus ArrangementsA variety of study-abroad opportunities are available to NKU students through membership in several consortia and through NKU exchange agreements with international universities.Study in Australia, Belize, England, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Scotland, and South Africa is possible in a wide range of courses and programs available through NKU's membership in the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA), which is headquartered at NKU. The Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) offers students academic language programs in Austria, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Spain. The NKU International Programs office has expanded its own international offerings to include student and faculty exchanges in Aarhus, Denmark; Gifu, Japan; Glasgow, Scotland; Munich, Germany; Leon, Spain; Cuernavaca, Mexico; Moscow, Russia; Nagoya, Japan; Heredia, Costa Rica; and Caen, France.
FacultyMore than 82 percent of the faculty members at NKU hold a doctoral degree or the terminal degree in their field. Classes are small, with a student-faculty ratio of 18:1. All classes are taught by faculty members; no classes are taught by graduate assistants.
Student GovernmentStudent Government (SG) is the elected student assembly at Northern Kentucky University. It is the official student voice on campus and represents the student viewpoint on University committees.
