Graduate programsNew College offers a "Green" MBA and Master's degrees in Humanities and Leadership, Poetics or Media Studies.Artistically inclined students can earn a graduate degree in Experimental Performance, leading to a career in this creative and innovative area of theatre, dance, fine arts and music. A three-year Master's in Activism and Social Change covers local and global movements for a just and more peaceful world, with studies of the global economy and exploration of methods and strategies for political organization. Through internships and lectures, this program combines classroom learning with hands-on experience in social movements and community organizations. Other Master's programs include the School of Law, the Graduate Psychology and Teacher Education program, launching careers in public interest law, our schools and grassroots community-based organizations. HistoryFounded 30 years ago as part of a nationwide movement for alternative education, New College continues this proud tradition, though most other alternative schools have since retreated, or have simply collapsed under the conservative counter-attack of the last two decades. But New College continues, despite setbacks and struggles, to live and experiment.Of course, we have changed. The undergraduate Humanities program, the original core of the school, was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1976 and has continued to evolve ever since. The program is now an integration of academic clusters in the areas of Arts, Music and Literature; Community & Global Studies; and Cultural Studies. Within each cluster there are emphasis areas in which students focus their interests in areas such as Anthropology, Psychology, Jazz Studies, Cultural Studies, Latin American Studies, Irish Studies, Gender Studies, Women's Spirituality, Ecology and Sustainable Communities, Performing Arts, Writing, Literature, etc. Exemplifying our commitment to integrating education and social change, all students must do a community practicum in order to graduate. In 1973, shortly after moving to San Francisco, the college created what is now the oldest public-interest law school in the country. Among the School's pioneering features are the active recruitment of non-traditional students, vigorous academic support services, and an apprenticeship program that prepares students for the real world of law practice before they graduate.
