Miami Semester Overview

About the University of Miami

The University of Miami is comprised of 12 colleges and schools that offer 150 undergraduate, 130 masters, 60 doctoral, and 2 professional areas of study. The Miami Semester Program offers current undergraduate students the opportunity to experience the rich cultures of South Florida and the expertise of the University of Miami faculty. Miami Semester encourages well-roundedness through experience and each program offers gives a new perspective for students studying various academic disciplines.

The University of Miami (UM) is in a prime location, offering students the opportunity to have the comforts of the suburbs with access to a vibrant city within minutes. South Beach, the Everglades and Coconut Grove are a few of the many areas that draw thousands of tourists to South Florida every year. UM is also only a few hours' drive to other popular destinations such as Key West and Orlando.

Admissions Information

Students from domestic and international colleges and universities are welcome to apply. Applicants should have completed at least two years of university with high academic marks.

International Student Application Guidelines

International students whose native language is not English, including those applying from a U.S. institution, are required to submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applicants holding an undergraduate or graduate degree from an academic institution within the United States or another English-speaking country will be exempt from this requirement. Students who wish to improve their English language skills should contact the University of Miami Intensive English Program at 305-284-2752 or www.miami.edu/iep.

International students should submit the following:

Completed International Student Application
Official transcripts from all universities attended
One letter of recommendation
A personal statement
- Marine Science applicants should include a statement on the type of research project in which you wish to participate
Architecture in New Urbanism applicants must include a portfolio of design
- Can be submitted electronically in PDF format or by mail
Bank verification letter
Applicants whose native language is not English must submit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results
$50 application fee payable to the University of Miami

Application Timetable

All applications materials for spring programs must be submitted by December 1, 2008. Applications will be accepted as early as September 2008. International students should apply as early as possible in order to apply for a student visa. Applications for the summer Cuban Studies program must be submitted by April 17, 2009.

Admission to the Miami Semester does not imply admission to the University of Miami. Students are not eligible to transfer to the University of Miami in the semester following their participation in the Miami Semester.
