For more than 50 years, the University of Miami Intensive English Program has provided a home away from home for international students from all over the world. The Intensive English Program prepares international students for academic study in the United States and for effective communication in professional environments. The mission of the University of Miami Intensive English Program is to prepare international students to enter a university in the U.S. by providing instruction in English language and academic study skills. The IEP also helps its international students adapt to university life and American culture through a wealth of activities both inside and outside the classroom. The program facilitates intercultural understanding, offers support and guidance related to non-academic issues, and builds ease and confidence in a new culture. The Intensive English Program is part of the Division of Continuing and International Education of the University of Miami. LOCATIONThe Intensive English Program is located in suburban Coral Gables, Florida. Also called "The City Beautiful," Coral Gables stands out as a rare beauty with its Mediterranean architectural style. All of the IEP offices and classes are in a newly-renovated, architecturally stunning building, Dean Robert Allen Hall, on the university's main campus. The campus is located approximately six miles from the Miami International Airport and less than 15 minutes from downtown Miami, Key Biscayne, and the Miami Beach area.HIGHLIGHTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI IEP
FACULTYEach Intensive English Program faculty member holds an advanced degree of a Master's degree or Ph.D. in the area of Teaching English as a Second Language or a closely related field. In addition, they have years of experience teaching both in the United States and overseas. Each of our instructors is a member of professional organizations such as TESOL or NAFSA and is dedicated to their field in the area of teaching, research, and innovation.PROGRAMThe IEP offers five levels of intensive English instruction. In levels 1, 2 and 3, students study Written Communication, Reading, Oral Communication and a Workshop class for added practice in conversation or reading skills. In levels 4 and 5, students take Reading/Writing, Oral Communication, and elective classes focusing on content areas or skills development.The IEP offers both 14-week and 6-week programs. Programs start in January, February, May, June, August and October. ACCREDITATION & PROFESSIONAL STANDARDSThe IEP is full accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). The IEP is a founding member of the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) and the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). Both of these organizations promote professional standards of quality in English programs.
