Aloha! Welcome to the University of Hawai`i at Hilo.

The English Language Institute (ELI) invites you to develop your English skills for university study. In addition to a rigorous academic preparation program, you will have the opportunity to take selected academic classes and earn college credit while studying English.

ELI classes are held on the beautiful campus of the University of Hawaii at Hilo (UHH). Courses are offered at three proficiency levels: intermediate, high intermediate, and advanced. Once you successfully complete all classes at the advanced level, you may continue your studies in a major of your choice. A TOEFL score is not required.

As an ELI student, you will enjoy the same privileges as other UHH students including access to student housing, the campus bookstore, library, computer labs, cafeteria, health services, student activities, and campus clubs.

The campus is located in Hilo, a safe, friendly town with an international population. Hilo is on the Big Island of Hawaii, 45 minutes from Honolulu by plane.

Admission Requirements

Students who meet all other admission requirements but do not have a TOEFL score of 500 (or equivalent) can be admitted as "General Studies" students into the ELI.

"General Studies" students are tested upon arrival. Based on test results, students will take ELI courses or a combination of ELI and regular university courses. Students at all levels of the ELI may take selected university courses as recommended by their academic advisor.

After completing the advanced level of the ELI, students may declare a major and continue with their studies in the field of their choice.
